Force a Damaged Heart (OnTOP oneshot)

“Get out! Don’t ever come back to this place!” the bar manager bawled and shooed the young man out with a broomstick. Seeing as the young man fell onto the ground, he grunted and shut the glass door.

Seung Hyun cursed and stood up, feeling a little tipsy, only to bump into another person.

“What the fuck! Get out of my face!” he yelled, but with his blurry eyesight, he saw that whoever he collided with wasn’t there anymore. “Damn.” He stepped forward and tripped, crashing onto the cement.

“What kind of crazy shit is going on here?” he grumbled. He sat up and saw a man younger than he sitting and leaning against the glass wall of the bar, his legs outstretched.

The man, by what Seung Hyun could see, had bruises and cuts on his arms and bloodstains on his clothes. He also had blood trickling down from the corner of his lips and dried up tears on his face.

“Yah.” He waved his hand before the man’s eyes, but he didn’t flinch. “Yah!”

The man swayed side to side dazedly then fell onto him.

“What the hell is wrong with this guy,” Seung Hyun mumbled to himself. He looked again at the man and sighed. Holding him by the shoulders, he tried to stand up.

“Mhh,” Seung Hyun heard the young man grumble as he came back to his room with a tray of food.

He placed the tray on the bedside table and sat down on the swivel chair across the room. He himself was exhausted, and it didn’t help that he had to clean up the poor guy he had brought to his small, one-bedroom apartment unit.

“Sheesh, I become a nice guy for once and this is what I get,” Seung Hyun muttered to himself.

“Ugh,” the young man groaned and his eyes opened slowly. Once he realized where he was, he sat up. “You!” He pointed to the older man. “Who are you? Why am I here?”

Seung Hyun raised an eyebrow then laughed once. “I’m your savior, don’t you know? I came out from a bar and crashed into you. Seeing as how you were beaten and bleeding, I couldn’t just leave you to die out there, right?”

He gulped. “T-thanks. What’s your name?”

“I’m Choi Seung Hyun, and you are?”

“Lee Jinki. I’m sorry for troubling you, ahjussi.” He tried to get off the bed, but a sharp pang on his side stopped him.

“Hey, what’s the rush? You should rest a bit more, don’t you think?” Seung Hyun grinned. “I brought you food if you’re hungry.”

Jinki nodded and said a soft thank you.

Seung Hyun, after watching Jinki eat for a while, stood up and turned away from him. “I’ll be in the main room if you need me. Try to sleep, will you? I’ll come in after a while if you’re still awake.” He raised a hand and left the room.

As Jinki ate the food that was offered to him, he realized that tears were running down his cheeks. He wiped them away, but it was no use as they were only replaced by a new batch of fresh tears. Swallowing the last of the meal, he tried to remember what happened to him.

“Hey, what are you doing with my girlfriend?” he confronted a big, burly man.

The man rumbled in laughter. “Your girlfriend? Hey, kid, I think you’re mistaken. This is my girl right here.” He leaned in and gave the girl by his side a deep kiss.

The girl smirked.

“You… Why did you do this to me?” Jinki asked the girl. “I thought you loved me, noona?”

“Loved you?” She chuckled scornfully. “What in the world made you think that, you fool? I came home late every night. I’d make my excuses to get away from you during our dates. Were you really that blind? You seriously believed that my cousin was hospitalized? That my dog had just died? You’re an ignorant little fool.”

The man laughed along with her.

Jinki dropped to his knees. He didn’t want to believe anything that she was saying. “No. No. No! You’re lying to me, noona! You’re a liar!”

“Hey, brat!” the man bellowed. “You dare call my lady a liar? What kind of stuck up moron have we got here? You want a beating, kid?”

He ignored the man and looked only at the woman he loved. “How could you do this to me?” he yelled, tears falling down his face.

The man snarled, angered by Jinki. He approached the young man and pulled him to a standing position, only to push him back and down again.

“What are you doing?”

“What do you think I’m doing, eh? Never speak to my girlfriend like that.” Cursing Jinki with threats, he came closer and started beating him.

It wasn’t long after that more men, the burly guy’s buddies, came and attacked him with metal poles and baseball bats.

Jinki couldn’t do a thing. He merely lay on the ground, battered and wounded. Tears kept streaming down his face as he received blow by blow with no utter of a word. Not too far away, he saw the girl he once thought loved him looking down at him sadly. He stretched a hand out and parted his lips to call for her, but the moment he saw her being picked up and led away by the man, he fell silent once again.

“Hey, what’s-your-name, are you finished eati- What’s wrong?” Seung Hyun rushed to the side of the bed once he saw his guest crying. “Hey, Jinki! What’s wrong? Was the food bad?” He looked concerned.

Jinki pressed his lips together, trying to fight back the tears, and shook his head. “I’m sorry, ahjussi. I just had some bad thoughts.”

Seung Hyun handed him the damp face towel that he had placed on the table. “Wipe your face with this.” He sat back on the swivel chair.

Jinki did as he was told and pressed the cold cloth on his face numerous times.

“Tell me, kid, what happened to you back there?” The older man leaned back.

“I found out that my girlfriend was cheating on me-rather, cheating on another guy with me. He wasn’t pissed off, but I was. It’s true that I had let her slip by with her fake excuses, and I was in suspicion, but I never thought it would be something like this. Then I said something to her that frustrated the guy, and he began beating me up. Later on, his crew came and did the beating for him.”

Seung Hyun was silent.

“I knew I would have died back there if Noona hadn’t told them to stop. I don’t know why she did it, or why she apologized to me as I dragged myself away from them. I planned to go for a drink after that-to forget about it in the meantime, but that was probably when I bumped into you. I’m sorry, ahjussi, for burdening you with this.”

“You’re an idiot, aren’t you?” Seung Hyun muttered.

“Huh?”

“Why didn’t you fight back to the guy?”

“He was really big and strong, and I didn’t want to hurt Noona by hurting him.”

The older man looked at him for a moment before speaking. “So you really loved her, huh?” He looked away.

“Yeah, I did, that’s why I didn’t want to believe her when she told me the truth.”

Seung Hyun bit his lower lip. “It really hurts to love a woman. You can never predict them. One day you’ll find out that they became bored with you and moved on to another guy without your knowing.”

“Ahjussi, don’t tell me you’ve been through that, too?” Jinki’s eyes widened.

He nodded and turned back to him. “When I saw you in front of the bar earlier, I had a feeling you had gone through something as awful as I had before. If you were just involved in a little street fight for no reason, I wouldn’t have brought you here.”

The younger man swallowed hard. “I’m really sorry for giving you trouble. I should go now, shouldn’t I?”

“You’re still too much in pain,” Seung Hyun said before he could make a move to get out of bed. “I live alone, so I wouldn’t mind a little company. After all, I know how it feels to be treated like that, and I had no one to look after me then. If it’s okay with you, you can stay here for a night or two. Just until you feel even a little better-both physically and emotionally.”

Jinki looked him in the eye, unable to speak.

“My own heartbreaking encounter,” Seung Hyun continued. “happened around six months ago. I tried to rush things because I wanted to forget about her, I desperately wanted to get her out of my life, but that didn’t help me. You can’t force a wound to recover so quickly, neither can you force a damaged heart to heal itself under short notice.”

“Ahjussi…”

Seung Hyun smiled. “But it’ll be better after some time. Just don’t rush it, all right? Plus, from what I learned, getting drunk doesn’t help at all. It makes you feel worse, actually.” He chuckled.

Jinki smiled, finally realizing that he could trust this strange man. “If it’s really no hassle for you, I’d like to stay tonight.”

“Yeah, buddy. We’re good.” He curled his fingers and stretched out his fist.

Jinki bumped knuckles with him. “Oh, yeah, Ahjussi-”

“I’d like to set some ground rules, though. One, stop calling me ahjussi. I have a name, and it’s Seung Hyun. Plus I’m not that much older than you.”

The younger man chuckled and nodded.

“Are you still hungry? ‘Cause I am! I’m going to get myself some food, you want any?” Without waiting for Jinki’s answer, he stood up and walked away to the kitchen.

“Oi! Ahjussi…!”
