Meanwhile on Minecraft
The world I've been playing lately on Minecraft has the spawn point on the border of a jungle (west) and a savannah (east), with an ocean to the south.
On the east side of the savannah, about half a day's travel, is a desert with a village (mostly leatherworkers and librarians; one butcher and one blacksmith). North of that is a savanna/jungle terrain lake with a nice flat island in the middle, however on the south shore of that lake, there is a ravine with an exposed mineshaft at the bottom!
Following the southern ocean shoreline west around the jungle, one eventually finds a hilly plains area with another ravine which exposes a mineshaft (which was, amusingly, the first one I found and consequently the main one I've been exploring). This is roughly a day and a half travel by land, a smidge less than a day by shortcutting across the sea.
