So, I got a call from
calandra right before heading for the office. There'd been acouple of shootings on campus (yea, I work at Virginia Tech if you didn't know). I elected to work from home since the police were asking people to stay put, and I can probably do 85-90% of my work from home anyway, barring meetings...
Glad I did, since by the time the police figured out what had happened the death toll was up to 33, and they were calling this the worst mass shooting in the history of the nation!
Basically my day consisted of calming my relatives, and monitor the main campus mail system. Which was being clobbered. The network guys say by late afternoon our oc-12c was saturating too, and our abilene connection was at 500mbps... For the unixy among you, the message store hit a load average of about 100. Which is pretty damn impressive for an 8 processor/8G starfire... But, yet, we never really queued, which I'm quite happy about. Despite babying it at the virus scanning machines, we pushed ever single one of university relations "urgent note to all users" messages out within minutes.. (To tens of thousands of users; about 8 times today...)
I don't think I know anyone who was in Norris personally, but I've certainly been around there (and in there a lot over the last couple of decades).
I've also now heard from folks haven't heard from in 20 years, who wanted to check in.. And my folks have heard from people *they* haven't heard from in longer wanting to check with them if I'm ok... Heck, I heard from my freshman roomate...
colleenk has a friend that's was a reporter for a taiwanese station, the station is sending a team, they're trying to find people to interview. She was trying to get me to agree to be interviewed, even if all I was going to do was talk about things I'd read on the net!
I've heard that MTV news is on the way. Yes, they're well known for reporting stories about gunmen. Sheesh. I wonder know if people wll forget all about the girls gone wild folks?
Ironic that we've been having meetings about redesigning our emergency notification systems, to be able to include mass-blasting cellphones and stuff. I suspect that will be made a higher priority.
Campus is closed tomorrow, but I still have to go to work... Maybe things will start calming down.
