State of NY Schools

My district is currently having budget issues and may layoff 37 teachers by Feb.

So, to summarize the school board meeting: Sometime last year 1.6 million dollars became "missing" from the budget and the person responsible is no longer around. The superintendant (who only took office this summer) and the board have managed to find 1.1 mil in extra expenditures to cut. However, that still leaves $500K. By contract the teachers had to be notified of possible termination by Dec 2 or the district can not lay them off until June. They are still working to adjust the budget so that the layoffs do not occur.

Now here's the kicker: Patterson is trying to deny NY schools the money he promised them for this year. WE are owed $1 million from the state that our current budget is dependent on. The legislature had approved the money, but Patterson still wants to deny the funds. Should this be the case next week, NY state schools will be in a class action lawsuit against the governor. WOW!!!

I think now is the time to A: write to your congressman about education and B: write to Obama who is wondering what to do with all the "extra" stimulus money that was not distributed. Perhaps it should be used for schools AND jobs (you know, two bird--one stone).

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH
