Poem: "Boscaresque"

Mar 31, 2024 23:23

This poem came out of the March 19, 2024 Bonus Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from . It also fills the "Woodworking" square in my 3-1-24 card for the National Crafting Month Bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by Anthony Barrette.

"Boscaresque"
picturesque; scenically wooded

Each forest is scenic
in its own way, unique
in the particular mix
of trees and bushes,
mosses and wildflowers.

It is raucous with the calls
of birds, of squirrels, of deer,
punctuated by the flash of
a blue wing, a gray tail,
a russet flank in the brush.

It is picturesque, beckoning
the eye and the camera,
tantalizing the paintbrush.

There are so many shades
of green, of brown, of life
tangled together everywhere,
embracing and thrusting.

There's something
burlesque about it too --

the voluptuous curves of
the trees, the way the willow
teases her fingertips through
the stream, the two ample bumps
on the maple trunk, the line of
the apple's back or linden's wrist,
the hornbeam proudly erect,

the sound of leaves like
a whisper of silk, and moss
underfoot a hush of velvet,

everywhere the scent of
earth and water and blossom
burgeoning on the breeze,

the trickle of sweat between
shoulderblades and the gush
of raspberry juice between teeth.

It is this which inspires the woodcarver,
the memory of a forest in its full glory
suggesting that this bump of wood
is a bear's rump, that line of grain
hides the turn of a woman's limb.

It is there, it is there, a memory
made solid in xylem and phloem,
lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose.

It is chemistry, alchemy, art
waiting only for the artist's hand.
