Poem: "Creative Catharsis and Vulnerability"

Dec 27, 2023 23:40

This poem was written outside the regular prompt calls. It fills the "Zincite - Creative Catharsis and Vulnerability" square in my 2-1-23 card for the Valentines Bingo fest. It has been sponsored by a pool with Dreamwidth user Fuzzyred. This poem belongs to the series Arts and Crafts America.

"Creative Catharsis and Vulnerability"

[February 28, 2023]

Art is often a private thing,
but sometimes it's more public.

To be an artist in residence
is to live in a permanent state of
creative catharsis and vulnerability.

It's opening tubes of paint and
spilling your guts on the palette.

It's painting in public, setting up
an easel where anyone can see.

It's answering question after question
from the curious onlookers as they
pause to see what's going on.

It's chasing light that won't
hold still and butterflies that
never land where they're needed.

Being an artist in residence is
everything that you've feared and
more than you could ever hope for.

Notes:

An artist in residence works a temporary position at an institution or other host, such as a college or a park system. They typically make works that feature the local scenery, and some also offer classes, presentations, or other events. The host provides a studio, housing, supplies, and sometimes a stipend. Such programs give artists a chance to travel around and gather inspiration from many different places.
