Poem: "Threatening Rain"
This poem came out of the August 5, 2014 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired and sponsored by Shirley Barrette.
"Threatening Rain"
A rowdy boy and
an indifferent spy,
the background of
Vladimir Putin is
not dipped in glory.
He has gone from
premier to president,
president to premier,
and back to president again.
There are no rainbows over Russia,
though, civil rights clouded over
and threatening rain.
On Putin's orders,
the Russian military
intervened in Ukraine
and annexed Crimea
yet for all his grasping, he cannot
stop the river of time from flowing, and
power drips through his fingers like water.
The world leaders
watch him strut his stage,
splintered floorboards creaking.
He speaks four languages
but understands nothing.
