My mom bought a 1,000sq.ft condo in San Jose in 2001. She paid $310K (insane, right?); she could currently sell for $460K. Madness. The sucky part is that even if she sold she wouldn't have enough money to buy anything else in the Bay Area.

It's so sad!!! Especially for people our age who just get caught in the renting game. The whole issue is just depressing.
