Why pull the flowers off?

Coupla reasons. First off, pests. Western flower thrips like to hitchhike on violets, eating the pollen. Not only do they spill pollen all over and make the blooms look a mess, but they can also cause blooms to be deformed and stunted, if they get into buds and chow there. They also spread INSV (impatiens necrotic spot virus) which there is no treatment for and will kill everything in your collection. My collection is currently valued in the nearly 5 digit range, so I am very careful about pests and disease ( ... )

I actually knew that about the transplanting. Huh.
Dang girl, the amount of work you put into those guys.
I kill most plants. I don't know how. Except for my Katrina jade. It survived two months with no water and only very indirect sun, two moves, and when it's stem randomly exploded (fungus?) a few of the leaves tried to root. They're still trying. It's not getting any bigger though, and I'm not sure why. I chalk it up to my house never getting above 60 degrees and being overshadowed by oaks so no sun gets in. I may give it to Shadow next time I go down.

Jade likes to be hot, yes. I have one in Wes' room, sitting in a North facing window, directly above a heater which is usually on. It dries out completely, but then I toss it in the shower when I remember, soak it good, then it's happy. This one started out as a leaf too, the neighbour's plant had dropped one in the hall, so I scooped it up and rooted it. Now it's a weeping bonsai. Seriously, weird plant.

Yeah, I knew that about succulents. I really don't know what happened. It wasn't getting watered more than once a week, but it's possible my mom let it it sit in water rather than dumping out the plate under the pot. I'm not usually in charge of the plants. I thought it liked a lot of water when it was a baby and trying to root though?
