Horrible timing
First time getting caught dumpster bageling.
"Do you realize what you are doing is illegal."-overweight BAB manager
"Is it? I'm sorry I'll just put these back, sorry I wasn't aware."-me.
I just have horrible timing. They closed at 3 so I figured maybe 4 was late enough and I showed up right at about 3:50 of course so did the manager or cleaning crew or whatever the guy was. He pulled up on his bike, yes his bike so you can't tell whether anyone is there because he takes it inside. Anyway he sees me I look right at him and wave and say "hi how ya doing?" Then when I go in for the bagels he tells me to skidaddle, in so many words. Illegal whatever.
I am still not convinced that it is illegal but I'm having a hard time locating specific information on whether it is illegal to take other peoples/businesses trash. I took a quick look at the city of Kalamazoos codes and ordinances and if I go back after he told me I couldn't take stuff from their dumpster then it is technically tresspassing and a misdemeanor. But unless there is a sign clearly stating no trespassing it's not illegal until they tell you you can't be there. As far as I can tell.
Ok so Sean Stoto tells me it is in fact illegal in some way which is dumb, apparently trash in dumpsters is the property of the city of kalamazoo? Wierd. Whatever they'll get the material one way or another, either the bagels rot in that dumpster or I eat them and they get them back through the sewer system.
I did however score at Sawalls on my way back. Their trash compactor is usually locked but it was wide open when I rode past and so I looked inside, got a box of granola, two bottles of pom brand tea drink and a loaf of fancy bread, mmmm.
I think I better stay away from the BAB on westnedge for a while now and/or show up later, I guess one hour after closing is not long enough. Of course sometimes I've shown up 3 hours after close and they haven't thrown em out. The dumpster bageling is an imprecise science.
Man I hope they don't start mixing coffee grounds and nasty stuff in on purpose now.
