I hate the word "deserving." It doesn't mean anything. It carries meaning, of course, but it doesn't make any sense. How can you deserve something? Do you deserve "good" things because you are "good"? Why? What makes these things any more yours than they are anyone else's? Do you deserve punishment when you are "bad"? What good will this do?
First come, first serve.
What the hell is the logic behind this? Why is the first person to arrive somehow more deserving? Have they been waiting longer? Not necessarily. And even if they were, would that mean anything? Have they worked harder for this reward? Not necessarily. Do they need it more? Not necessarily. Will they use it better? Not necessarily. And really, would the person who does all of those things really deserve it more? Hmmm...
I think that "first come, first serve" is just the most convenient way we have of determining whether or not someone "deserves" something. We feel it's our place to judge, and impose our sense of entitlement not only on ourselves, but on other people as well.
I certainly carry this mentality too. And the saddest part is, I don't (yet) see an alternative.
I don't even know if any of that makes any sense, but I tried (am I deserving of praise because I tried? ;-) ). I hate "deserve," "should," "earn," etc.
