Karl Rove gave a speech at the American Enterprise Institute this morning where he said the president's approval rating was not the issue. His "likability" numbers are still high.
The gist of the message is that people still "like" the president, even if they believe he is is incompetent. I like Brittany Spears, but I wouldn't want her to be President. I think Larry the Cable Guy has great stage presence and is funny as all hell. He'd be great to have over for barbeque. But I wouldn't want him for president.
It's telling that Karl is ever the optimist. Reaching for that silver lining...
