That really is an "ugh" conclusion.

It could, yes. I think it's been less true for me because I've always been an intentional viewer and, unlike him, I watch sports rarely (pretty much only the soccer World Cups). Plus, I am willing to watch an entire series at once before moving on to the next one whereas he prefers to see things on an episodic basis. But it makes a difference if I say, "Hmm, maybe I'll try that out" to saying "I'll sign up for this service so that I can watch that."
Yes, and that conclusion is my big concern for the future, which is the co-option of fan-run and designed spaces for the purpose of tracking and selling.
