1) Unfortunately for shapinglight, our sole bettor on the last birdy post, we have to announce that we already have a new mourning dove nest. The day after our last post, Gwen left the nest (and returned briefly that evening). Then yesterday, a new nest was already underway, meaning that the winning bet would have been 3 days.
2) Speaking a few weeks ago about Russell Mulcahy's influence on Teen Wolf I noticed we had a great shout out to QaF's Babylon last week. I have to say I really like the way this show deals with Danny and how unconcerned everyone is about his sexuality.
Though to me, the great untold story is why he is good friends with Jackson because it makes me question Danny's judgment. I would really love to see backstory on how that came to be, because I imagine it would be incredibly revealing about both characters. For that matter, why is the prickly and self-involved Jackson friends with the friendly and well liked Danny either?
But my favorite lines in the episode were Stiles trying to insist to his dad he was at a gay club because he is gay and his dad not being thrown in the least:
"You don't know, I could be gay!"
"Not wearing that, you're not."
Also? I loved the fact that Scott was smug and Stiles was envious of him because someone bought them a drink.
3) Speaking of men's clothing, what is with the layered look that keeps being promoted? We were in Chicago on Friday and they were having record days of 100+ degree heat there -- this in a northern area near a lake. And yet stores were promoting layered shirts for summmerwear (this when it was so warm in the mall itself that I was sweating almost the whole time). Is this just a marketing ploy to get them to buy more clothing (2 shirts when 1 would suffice?)
4) And wow, are northern areas still not prepared for these super hot temperatures. There are a number of places that still don't have A/C or what cooling they do have is just inadequate. We stopped at a restaurant to get take out for dinner and decided to have some cold drinks while we were there, just as a heat break. The server asked if we were taking food home because of the heat in the restaurant (he was dripping as he said this). We weren't but that would sure have been a good plan. Despite the drinks, we were so warm by the time our order came that we were glad to go.
This made me particularly unsurprised to hear of the several heat-related deaths they've had. One advisory that often goes out is for people without A/C to go to a public space that has it. But I can tell you, the public spaces we were in were largely warm too, probably because big open-space design is murder on heating and cooling.
5) This article on
bricks and mortar stores showrooming themselves had an interesting statistic. "More than half of the sales from Walmart.com are now picked up at Walmart stores, Mr. Anderson said. With the cash option, Walmart was trying to appeal to customers who did not have bank accounts or credit cards. Walmart says the majority of in-store purchases are made with cash or debit cards, and that about 15 percent are made with credit cards.
In the first weeks of the cash option, Walmart noticed that a different set of customers also found the service appealing. About 40 percent of the customers who paid with cash when ordering online ended up using noncash options, like a credit card or check, when they arrived at the store. They simply had not wanted to provide that financial information online." Apparently they haven't noticed that it doesn't matter how the data is entered if a company is hacked.
