those mourning dove babies?
The short answer is, not much. Unlike the drama in early spring, there seem to have been no further visits of competing couples, or appearances by other birds with the exception of erratic visits by a hummingbird.
The babies have grown quickly. The above was from just two days ago. The parents have been leaving the nest for extended periods, probably to build up food as the babies are aggressively hungry when they return.
Although they're still a little young to be leaving the nest, one of the two flew off this morning when Mike went out to pick some basil. (We dubbed them Morgana and Gwen, and figured Morgana was the one who did the leaving). That left Gwen looking rather bereft in the pot by herself.
Missus returned to feed her about an hour after we snapped this so she may stick around for another few days. But at least it looks like we finally got a successful nest this year after all the mysterious happenings.
I thought it might be fun to take some bets about how long it will be until the next nesting pair shows up. Anyone want to lay down some of their fandom currency on a date? (Quatloos, Federation credits, barter, currency pledges, Naquadah etc. all accepted).
