Knee Update #6

Feb 18, 2010 14:02

I have made a decision.

Unless something changes, I will have my surgery here in Albuquerque on the 24th of March. The decision was made on the basis of finances, but more importantly on the grounds that the surgeon I have already seen here is apparently the best orthopedic surgeon in the state. The Iowa scene was a little sketchy....

Because the surgery is mid-week and the first work-less recovery phase would also be done mid-week, I will most likely end up missing a full month of work. Our volunteer Spanish teacher who taught the two Social Studies classes I am teaching this year last year will probably be be covering for me. I would actually not be teaching for a solid five weeks because Spring Break is the day before the surgery. March 12 - April 19.

This break from work sounds pretty relaxing. I think of reading and writing letters, watching movies, drawing or perhaps painting, knitting. But mostly I am stressed about how to make ends meet when I will be giving up two paychecks to my sub. Some have suggested asking for help from my churche's benevolence fund and others have suggested that I look into Federal Workers Compensation. I also stress a little about being lonely and gaining weight (before my wedding--exactly the opposite of what I'd want) while I can't really get out and about. My mom may come to ABQ the week of the surgery. But then there is the question of how to make that work. I don't really have place to put her in my apartment.... I have had families from church offer their homes, but I fear that would be awkward.

I hope my insurance goes through soon so I have a policy to use when I go for surgery and that miraculously they don't deny coverage because my knee was a pre-existing condition. I guess I have a lot of fears of the unknown right now.

On the flipside, I have achieved my goal of getting surgery scheduled this week and also biking every night for four nights since getting that stationary thinger.
