in other news, i was sitting in my french class this morning when an air raid siren went off. my teacher ignored it and kept on teaching until she looked up from the board and realized that all of the students were sitting absolutely still, with varying degrees of shock and terror on their faces. at which point she laughed and told us that the first wednesday of every month at noon, the siren goes off just as a precaution - but if we hear it again, outside of the preordained time, it means something major is happening. what was even more frightening than the siren itself were my teacher's nonchalant examples of what the siren would be used for - to alert people in case of, you know, biological warfare, or a nuclear bomb! gee, the siren's going off...i guess i have, what, thirty seconds to live?

as i pushed through the crowd of smokers outside the building ten minutes later (the siren was still ringing) i heard an american voice yell out 'the germans are coming!'. i have to admit i giggled a little.
