KFC is not stamp-licking good, in my opinion. The flesh-peddling company is asking customers to sign a petition requesting that the United States Postal Service print the image of their iconic Colonel Sanders on postage stamps. Success is great and all, but when it comes at the expense of billions upon billions of defenseless individuals -- despite his worldwide recognizability -- this is not an icon we ought to be celebrating.
Reader Em agrees, contacting the USPS with this letter:
Hmm, a stamp commemorating Colonel Sanders. Do we, as kind Americans, want to support keeping birds in windowless, stifling buildings for the only six weeks of their natural 17-year lifespan that they will get to live? Do we want to commemorate feeding them hormones and other animals so that they grow so rapidly that they're stricken with deformities and heart attacks? Do we want to celebrate mutilating defenseless birds by cutting off the first third of their beaks, causing them lifelong pain and suffering? Do we want to encourage abusive practices in slaughterhouses such as slitting someone's throat while they're still alive and conscious, dipping them in scalding water, letting them drown in their own blood, and cruel slaughterhouse games such as beating chickens against walls, stomping on them, or hitting them so hard their entrails spew out?
NO, I AS AN AMERICAN DO NOT WANT A STAMP COMMEMORATING THE ANIMAL-ABUSING COLONEL SANDERS.
You can
write your own opposition to the USPS, and see if you can't help keep institutionalized cruelty to billions of chickens per year off stamps that represent you and me.
