There were no people of color in the original except for the super racist chinese cook that was on the ship (however, for the 30s that character wasn't even really that bad compared to alot of other movies to be honest). There were a few people of color in this version that weren't just background when there really weren't any in the original.
As for the natives. I really don't see a way around that if you are going to make a King Kong movie. The entire beginning of the story is that the natives on skull island kidnap the girl and offer her as a sacrifice to Kong. I don't really think they were a representation of what natives are, this island is the crazy exception where everything is way more metal then everywhere else in the world. It wasn't good persay, but it was a part of the story that you couldn't get rid of and still make the movie. It could have been way worse. But maybe I just look at Peter Jackson with tainted eyes because I love him so.
It was a really great movie, I can think of things that were wrong with it but that is true of everything. I can't think of anything so wrong with it that I would actually say it was terrible or anything. Considering it is very true to the original and the original was made in the 30s, I think Peter Jackson took some obvious steps to try and combat some of the racism that was an integral part of the story. Basically, making the first mate a very smart, very capable black man. In the original he was a sexist, semi-racist white dude.
