I wasn't accusing you of sounding one way or another, those were just the first thoughts that popped into my head after I read your post: 1) a time when he was trying to "steal" and 2) a time when he "stole" without meaning too, and then not really at all since it was the wrong girl! Nothing to apologize for. :D
It is interesting to think about a "talk" after the kiss on the porch and one after the kiss on the bed. He won't want to talk about it because he'll assume he knows why she did it and what it meant, and there's no need to discuss that. The Porch Kiss would have been discussion worthy--if it had been Elena.

My poor bb, Damon.
I don't think there's anything wrong with Damon's journey being invested in Elena and his relationship with her. Lots of men have been metaphorically saved because of a woman; what I like about the Damon/Elena story is that it can never be solely ABOUT her, even though it originated with her. It will always be about HIS HUMANITY, and his relationship with all other beings. She's his point of light, helping him see things correctly. Eventually, though, it will be about his choices independent of her--read: how he doesn't pursue her while Stefan's gone.
Because the other thing he said when he was dying? "Tell Stefan I'm sorry."
Damon is well and truly love's bitch, he does keep getting hurt so badly and so often; and I do think it's a continuing trend, from his father onwards! You can totally see that Damon would've been the problem child, who brought the family shame by returning from the Civil War (which is funny in a way, because their agenda which he didn't "agree with" probably means slavery, so Damon's essentially been a decent person for the most part). In the books he'd left university and come back, which is also so easy to imagine (they were Italian in the books!) And for some reason, I always think of older brother!Damon being the center of young!Stefan's world and his hero and his role model and his everything (awwww). Ian is good at playing the dysfunctional older brother (think LOST), heh.
Yeah, I'd love to see the explorations of Damon's development from all angles, and I'm so glad the show is exploring that (even with regards to Stefan now, I imagine, esp with him gone). And that line, SO MUCH LOVE <3 TVD just keeps reminding me why I love it so freaking much!
