65.4 - Ficlet: Your muse must make amends to someone they have wronged in the past, either by word or deed. It's time to come clean.

"Couldn't I just call her," Seth asks, looking for some sort of acknowledgment from his family. Kirsten gives him an incredulous look, Sandy pats him on the back, and Ryan just shakes his head slowly before taking a sip of his coffee. "I'll take that as a no..." he adds, sending one last 'puppy dog face' complete with the eyebrows to Ryan. His best friend says nothing. He just stands, takes his paper, and heads out to the pool house leaving Seth alone.

Against his better judgment and his family's, Seth cradles the phone in his hand before dialing an all too familiar number. Despite his and Ryan's cold war, he needs to clear the air with Summer before attempting anything else with his best friend.

Avril Lavigne's latest hit plays into his ear as he waits for Summer to answer the phone.

"Yeah?" she asks, the chorus ending abruptly.

Hanging up seems the only option, Seth dropping the phone in the process. As if on cue, Ryan strolls back into the kitchen on his way to work. "Don't call her Seth," he says, disappearing out the front door.

Seth's hands creep back to the phone but as he dials this time, the phone itself rings causing Seth to drop it yet again. Always the smart one, the teenager answers.

"Cohen!" Summer screams from the other end of the line. "You just called and hung up," she says, her Newport accent apparent on the words, 'called' and 'hung.'

"I did. I did - call and hang up on you, Summer," he says, he sentence broken, his voice, nervous.

"Stalking me, Cohen?" she asks.

"No, look, I - how are you, Summer? How was...your Thanksgiving?"

Seth moves the phone away, giving it a look of disdain. He hates this phone. No, he hates himself for using this phone. He could very well hang up but that of course wouldn't be nice. And Seth is anything if not nice. Unless he's being sarcastic. He inches the phone back to ear.

"Fine, Cohen. Do you need something?" Summer sounds annoyed, never a fan of Seth's phone calls. At least, not since before the Summer.

"I don't know...did you need something, Summer?"

Smooth, Seth. Real smooth, he thinks.

"You're the one who called me, Cohen!" Her patience is waring thin and Seth can't help but make out the faint voice of her current boyfriend in the background.

"Right, look - Summer, I..." Is he really ready to do this? All signs point to not a snowball's chance in hell but he has no choice. Summer answered and his feelings for Ryan hadn't changed. "I wanted - I wanted to apologize. I wanted to apologize for leaving you and sailing off to Tahiti."

"If this is just another pathetic attempt to get me back, Cohen-" she starts before she's cut off, Seth now in a standing position. "It's an even more lame attempt then running in front of Zack's car..."

"No, Summer. It's no lame attempt. It's not an attempt. I am attempt-less. I just - I wanted to apologize," he continues, the ending of 'apologize' awkward and hard to say. "And I did. So, I'm sorry. -- Again. For leaving you. And sailing away. And not calling."

A few seconds pass, hours in Seth time before Summer answers back.

"Thanks."

Her thanks is genuine as is the click that comes through when she hangs up on him.
