[PTM] application, blue oyster cult quote

They looked backward and said goodbye...she had become like they are
She had taken his hand...she had become like they are
Come on baby...don't fear the reaper
- Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear the Reaper

It wasn't as if Seth feared death. Death just wasn't really on his mind - at all. Conversations he and Ryan had usually involved Summer or Marissa, school, Newport in general, but never something as morbid as death.

When Ryan was working, Seth found himself thinking about how he wished Ryan were home. They were seriously lacking in Seth-Ryan time considering work and junior year homework load.

Death wasn't really a topic of conversation in the Cohen household.

The Nana's visit was abrupt. Seth had warned Ryan about Nana Cohen. He had warned his best friend about how shrill she could be and how nothing his father did could ever make this woman happy.

Needless to say, the Cohens were all surprised when The Nana's arrival was followed by hugs, smiles, and love. It only took a few days of being there for Sandy to get her to admit why she was really there.

Nana Cohen had cancer.

Seth Cohen never had to wrap his head around cancer or disease. He had gone to his grandmother on his mother's side's funeral when he was much younger - but he couldn't remember that far back. It was hard for him to be in the same room with The Nana. The big 'C' work unsettled Seth in ways he himself couldn't have predicted.

The following year, when Ryan was at work and Seth was manning the pool house (which only meant that he was hanging out there for fear his parents would find him in his room to do some menial task), Seth's phone rang.

"Nana Cohen" flashed across the screen of his cell phone before he picked up.

She was fine. She was living in Miami. And she was in love - as well as happy.

If only Seth never had to hear the word 'cancer' again.
