In a fit of madness my roommate and I decided to throw a dinner party for Easter. We invited about twenty people and a large number of them came. As both we and our guests survived, I feel authorized to give these bits of advice about hosting dinner:
1) Have something else that you really, really don't want to do (such as revising class lectures). This makes cleaning and planning and shopping much more appealing.
2) Make things that cook in crock pots. Don't make things that have to be stirred constantly.
3) Count the pots and pans to make sure you'll have enough. Also count the burners on the range.
4) Have a roommate that likes making fancy desserts.
We borrowed chairs and we borrowed tables, and we also borrowed a great deal of silverware. Somehow everyone crammed into our apartment and I remembered to start the couscous, but I forgot to cook the green beans. We finally (finally!) got rid of some of our alcohol and we all ate too much dinner and played cards and then ate too much desert and then kept eating because I greedily bought lots of Easter candy and cunningly left it out in little dishes. It was a fun madhouse, although I had to retire from the crowd for a bit in the middle (I washed dishes. That's an advantage to being host; you have an excuse to escape if you want it).
Photos are in the usual place (and if you don't know where that is, you ought to e-mail me and I'll tell you all about it).
