Bizare social conventions

I went to get my bridesmaid dress yesterday and reinforced my suspicion that the wedding industry is a sham.  First of all, why are brides forced to wear the least attractive of all colours?  Second, who thought it was a cute idea to dress civilian adults in identical outfits?  Third, bows on the clothes of anyone over the age of ten are lame.

The wedding industry is indeed a sham! There are a few vendors/sellers/companies that i beleive not to be evil, but they are certainly the exception ( ... )

Hoo-ray for you! (but why China? Although I suppose that most of our clothes come from there now. Sigh.) I think we should write a manifesto and stage a wedding revolution, where we refuse to do the ridiculous things that other people want us to do, and only do those ridiculous things that we want to do.

You know, that's pretty much what I decided when I found myself faced with the prospect of planning a wedding. One small problem is that the person I'm marrying wants me to do some of those ridiculous things, but ... part of the wedding planning process is learning how to compromise when you don't agree... so... I guess I'm learning :)

Still, I spent a few weeks looking through theknot.com and a wedding magazine, and I thought it mostly quite ridiculous. It's also funny that while we were in Colorado initially scoping out places to host the reception, we ran into 3 or 4 people working in the wedding industry who were engaged and also planning their own weddings. They *ALL* were planning simple potlucks for family and friends. No reception hall, no DJ, no expensive and fancy cake. That really tells you something. :)

(I have no idea why China!! It seemed pretty crazy to me, too.)

Did any of the wedding people think that *any* of the wedding stuff was worth keeping? Or were they just so sick of planning that they threw everything out?
