some things don't change

A scream resounds through the house, one that hasn't been heard for a long time.
"BULAE BULAE BULAE BULAE BULAE," follows and everyone knows who it is even before the woman scrambles out of the room frantically.
Women are they all now, Seohyun thinks. If the youngest feels that way, the older sisters should too, right?
No, not really. Yuri and Yoona snigger like a pair of elementary kids in their room, having planted the stimulus to Tiffany's earsplitting reaction -- after Yoona had uncovered it in the morning while digging for a cap in the wardrobe. Her hair's short again now, but she doesn't feel as grouchy about it as back during the Tell Me Your Wish era. She believes the heart is more important and far more resistant than one's looks, just like how she sees her eight sisters as beautiful even in the mornings.
Hyoyeon hisses as Jessica topples a glass over in delayed shock half a second later. Mock punches are exchanged before Hyoyeon starts wiping up the liquid while Jessica looks on apologetically -- not apologetic enough to move even one of her princessy fingers though. Instead, her mind drifts off recalling how the blond doesn't do things much differently whether drunk or not; floor tiles still seem to be her responsibility.
Tiffany realizes her own folly by the tenth "bulae" screamed, of course. She breathes and calmly enters the living room, joining the maknae, Taeyeon and Sunny. A grin is plastered on Sunny's face, all too familiar with the workings of such an event. She looks at Taeyeon and Seohyun and the trio bursts out in laughter, unable to contain anymore of it.
"Yah," Tiffany starts, but is interrupted by a war cry from the kitchen. "Let me try some please!" shouts Sooyoung in her aegyo voice. "Euijin needs food!"
"Hana toooooo!" screams another who sounds a lot like a kid at the first listen, but really, is 23-year-old Yoona flying out of her room. Yuri stomps out a little later with a look of disdain on her face; fingers making futile efforts of ridding the deafness caused by Yoona's sudden exclamation in her ear.
Seohyun pats Tiffany on the shoulder consolingly. "It's okay unnie, phobias don't go away easily even with age," and scurries after Yuri into the kitchen. Hyoyeon emerges, nagging at the duo who are too comfortably slouched against their beanbags for dinner. "Yah danshins, there's a reason why the shikshins are so much taller than you two couch potatoes!"
Clapping ensues as Tiffany laughs at the two, getting her sweet revenge. Sunny pushes: one cheek out with her tongue; and, one Taeyeon away from the beanbag with her hands. Taeyeon falls dramatically and pretends to be suffering critical injuries, but Tiffany pulls Sunny up and bids goodbye to the dork's self-directed skit. She slouches on the floor, lazy to get up, until a commotion is heard.
"Kwon Yuri, stop pulling all the healthy food to your side, I want to eat them too!"
"Relax, will you! Not like I eat as fast as you do!"
She chuckles to herself over the shikshin's obsession over food, but leaderly instincts bolt her senses alert when she sees the clock on the wall. Damn, less than an hour before Oppa's picking them all up for practice!
Next thing she knows, she's pulling the salad bowl out of SooRi's tug-o-war. "We're running late, eat! No more arguing!" The two stop immediately, but childishly continue flashing malicious looks at each other until a grin breaks out on their faces. Tiffany notices and she feels her eyes curve along in a smile.
Hyoyeon starts to recount an embarrassing incident that happened at the dorm, for the sake of the few members who missed it being either caught up with individual activities or are now staying at their own houses. She does it extremely well with her animated voice and expressions, and seven girls break out in uncontrollable laughter.
The eighth girl whines. "Unnie! I thought it was a secret between us!"
With no shame, Hyoyeon defends herself, "Hey, no secrets among us! Who asked you to be such a choding! Not me!"
Jessica pipes in. "Yoona-yah, that's what you get for pranking Tiffany just now."
This reminds the earlier victim and everyone silences as they look at Tiffany rise, her eyebrows knitting together.
"Im Yoona. You're dead."
Yoona attempts to excuse herself to the toilet but starts running when Tiffany orders her to stop, the order sounding scarier than intended thanks to Tiffany's volume.
The blame is pushed. "IT WAS YURI UNNIE'S IDEA!"
This time, the accused barely has time to react before Commando Tiffany headlocks her and harshly screws a fist against her cheek, while the rest watch on while eating. Sooyoung jabs Jessica, mumbling incoherently. This induces from Seohyun a "Unnie, swallow your food first!", so after three seconds, when Tiffany releases Yuri and gets her to go bring Yoona back, Sooyoung finally repeats her words.
"Look what beast your Sica-effect released."
Jessica smiles. "Well... She's cool."
Sooyoung shows a what-is-wrong-with-you expression which the maknae giggles over, before pointing out something amusedly.
"At least you got a minute of eating without Yuri unnie and Yoona unnie fighting with you."
"Oh! That's true."
As they finish eating one by one, Sunny delegates each of them some clearing up work to do and no one complains. Taeyeon flashes a smile to Sunny, thankful that she has been and will always be able to count on Sunny to play the mother role; just like a hen who ushers her chicks forward.
A little later, as Seohyun is looking around for her phone, she notices the old photo hung on the wall -- a group shot of them nine in marine outfits. Warmth fills her, but someone boos in her ear, scaring Seohyun cold as the culprit chortles.
"You won't find your phone just by looking at my pretty face, you forgetful baby," Hyoyeon teases, waving the phone in her hand. "Let's go! Taengjumma is gonna nag at us for being so slow!"
Seohyun nods sheepishly and takes one more look at the family portrait.
It doesn't matter if they're girls or women, or grannies; like what the unnies have said before -- as long as they're together, they'll forever be Girls' Generation.
The baby scuffles out to join her unnies, a new journey in wait of them.
