i forgot to mention the ethics morons today

ah the lovelieness of my ethics class. we were asked to split up into groups and decide who the top five moral/ethical role models were. this is what the class, as a whole, came up with:

Jesus
Mother Teresa
Princess Diana (which my professor wrote on the board as "Princess Dye")
George W. Bush
Winston Churchill
Pope JP2
Gandhi
Billy Graham
Oprah
Dr. Phil

i thought it got bad just with the idea of dubya as an ETHICAL role model... until they started stating the reasons for these choices.

Jesus: he's perfect. (ok... well for christians, sure. i give you that. but this was supposed to be in general)
Mother Teresa: (no arguments there)
Princess Diana: she used her wealth and fame to do good, and in my professor's words, "She told the royal family where to get off and that takes guts."
George W. Bush: again, my professor "No matter what you believe, you have to admit it takes courage to stand in front of a lot of people who don't agree with you and stay the course." (wouldn't it be even MORE courageous to admit you're wrong and try to better the situation?)
Winston Churchill: (this was another one without argument, interestingly enough)
Pope: he's come from a lower class background to so much, and has made many policy changes that have benefited many
Gandhi: (again, no argument)
Billy Graham: girl in back of room "Cause he preaches the Bible." (yeah, cause THAT'S what i look for in a moral role model... someone who has made tons of money TALKING about a book that applies to only a portion of the population)
Oprah: she makes millions and donates millions
Dr. Phil: he's honest. (oh COME ON! so am I! i tell people how it is too... but i'm not paid millions to do it and no one calls me an ethical role model! gimme a break!)

eventually the class decided that the top five were (in this order):
1. Jesus
2. Mother Teresa
3. Gandhi
4. Princess Diana
5. G.W.
the pope didn't even make the list. these people are pathetic.

times like these you wonder if southern protestants are not an entire species of humanity altogether- the thought process is certainly nothing i'm familiar with.
