I just finished watching the movie I Love You Phillip Morris starring Jim Carrey and Ewan Mcgregor. I can honestly say it was one of the strangest movies I've ever seen...
There's this thing about certain movies and books where the moment you finish them you kinda feel this resounding echo in your mind. It's like the Law and Order "Dun-Dun". It's that feeling you get where you can tell that the story is going to stick with you for a while, and you just can't shake it.
I definitely got that from this movie. I don't know exactly how to feel about it... So I'm just gonna ramble and hope I get somewhere.
First of all, while I did get this movie mostly because it was a gay love story, I wasn't trying to "get my rocks off" for lack of a better phrase. I actually don't think Ewan is hot, and I damn sure don't think Jim Carrey is hot enough to want to see him in a sex scene. I just wanted to see how these two would play it out (it being a gay relationship that is). And I wasn't disappointed. It was seriously one of the sweetest, though admittedly fucked up, love stories I've ever seen in a film. Ewan's character, Phillip, was such a sweetheart-southern-boy. He was adorable, and you definitely can see why Jim Carrey's character, Steven, immediately felt the need to protect and spoil him.
Although the gay theme of this movie is what drew me to it, the plot totally overshadows that issue. Eventually you forget about the gay issue, and just see it as two people in a loving relationship that keeps getting screwed up because one of them can't stop being a con-man. Steven can't stay out of trouble. Steven is just one of those characters where you both love and dislike him. He's so clever, but dumb at the same time- it's frustrating.
Then the plot totally plays with your emotions. It made me laugh, cry, feel anger, and sorrow. The movie is billed as a comedy, but there are moments throughout that are just so heartbreaking or tender, and Carrey plays them all amazingly, that the moment you think "Shit, why Steven!" they throw something at you that makes you really care about the characters despite the frustration.
I would recommend this movie, but you have to be in the right mood I think.
I have never really been a huge fan of Ewan McGregor, but after this I have to admit that he has a good chance of becoming one of my faves.
