Review of the Creation Museum

I went to the Creation Museum on Friday with my sister and her dad. I am an agnostic, and usually am quite pessimistic about anything to do with religion, but I just wanted to see what the Creation Museum is all about. I think that part of knowing what you believe in is exploring other beliefs that are out there. I also think that people are prejudiced against Christianity (myself included sometimes), so I wanted to go in with and open mind.

But that being said, I am not a huge fan of the museum, but it does have some cool stuff. I personally wouldn't go back. Religious beliefs aside, the Museum just didn't have enough substance. The cardinal rule of any museum is that it needs artifacts and things to look at. Key word: things. The Creation Museum was really lacking in that aspect. A museum can't just be a bunch of plastic wall-hangings of reading material with only a few actual exhibits. There is literally one whole room with nothing but pictures (generic ones that I could find easily with a google search) and tv's explaining the creationist view on some issue involving molecular structures.

And also, ARTIFACTS are important... And what kind of artifacts could a museum about religion have? They did have some recreations of ancient books of scripture and scrolls, and a few real dinosaur bones and fossils, but other than that they relied on scenes from the bible represented by animatronic human figures. Those were a bit cool, but also very creepy. (One of them looked just like Natalie Portman, actually).

Also, there is a serious misuse of space and the layout is very awkward. It doesn't really allow people to walk through freely or stop and study the numerous written explanations on the walls.

Now, to address the religious aspect of my experience... I can say that it is very awkward as a non-christian to go through the museum. And the funny thing is, I actually agree with most of their view on Evolution. I actually agree with them when they say that there was a starting point, where all animals were created at the same time, and then each species evolved into many sub-branches through natural selection and adaptation to environment. I agree with them, and I still felt kind of awkward. One reason being, there were so many details that were trying to go against what science says, but most of them seemed like straw-grasping to me. But most of it is that they have different morals than me...

I have to admit though I think it might be better to go during the summer, so you can at least enjoy the gardens and the petting zoo. The petting zoo had some cool animals, and the gardens would definitely be pretty in the summer.

But, if anyone was thinking of going... I really wouldn't recommend it, unless you are religious. In my opinion, It's just not worth the money...
