If you can't guess it from my new banner and the user icon and the multiple other hints, it's Queer As Folk! Seriously, where have you been all my life?!? This is a dream come true, and more. Although you could say that I have been living under a semi-rock coz :
- I have been obsessed with anime and manga and only recently have I started watching English series
- My country's pretty much a conservative country and we haven't even had a whiff of QAF. I mean, heterosexual sex, sometimes a super hot/long/all of the above kiss, gets censored on any screen, big or small, what more homosexual sex scenes/people? Heck, even the slightest hint of "deviant" behaviour, eg. drugs, is frowned upon. They seem to think we're all idiots and that the moment we see any "deviant" behaviour on screen we'll rush out and do it.
So now that I've bought all 5 seasons and speed-watched it all within 2 weeks (can I get any more obsessed than that?!?), 7 years after the first season came out, the final verdict? One of the hottest shows with the hottest guys and why did it have to end?!?!?
I promised my friend that I would rate the couples in order of my preference and here it is.
- Ben and Micheal (how can it ever be any one else? The utter hotness that is Robert Gant, especially in glasses, and the utter dorky cuteness that is Hal Sparks, cannot be denied. In fact, RPS anyone?)
- Brian and Micheal (coz the childhood friend with unrequited love after how many years thing is just too cute to pass up. Plus they're cute when they kiss)
- Emmett and George (well yeah, George is a really really old man but he and Em were in love and kinda cute together)
- David and Mike (coz David was really hot but was a total control freak which we could explain away as him being set in his ways and finding it difficult to change at his age)
- Brian and Justin (coz their on-again-off-again love angst is really annoying...but they had the most sex scenes. WHY?!?! Why not more Ben and Mike scenes?!?!)
- Ted and Blake (not much feelings one way or another but I'm glad Ted's happy)
- Em and Drew (they're really hot together but...somehow I think even if they were to end up as a couple, if wouldn't work. I mean, Drew cheated on his wife when he was married, who's to say he won't cheat on Em even after deciding he's ready to settle down?)
- Ted and Em (this is one couple that I'm not getting the couple-y vibe from and was a total waste of time to create, establish and wreck)
There were other minor couples here and there but since they don't really last, it's not worth mentioning.
Gah! I am in love with it and I can't get enough of Ben and Mike. Oh god, Robert Gant is so hot and Hal Sparks is so utterly adorable. In fact, I'm seeing RPS opportunity but no one seems to want to write it. The fandom is rather small...
Oh, one fascinating fact about Hal and Ben. In the show, Ben's like really into all the Eastern lifestyle, with the health food and the Buddhism and the meditation and stuff. But in one of the "events" that they did for QAF where they followed the actors around for a day, Hal seems to be the one into the Eastern stuff. Like, he does some kinda kung-fu for his morning exercise, ate Shabu-Shabu for lunch then had acupunture. Cool, isn't it?
Also, another thing about this show is that it kept the foreign cultures intact. For example, Ben served up miso soup and they drank it straight from the bowl, without using spoons or anything. And they had this Japanese hooker (or as they say, trick) and he was speaking actual Japanese. And there was this elderly couple at a Chinese medicine shop and they spoke actual Cantonese. All this I can vouch for since I was listening closely to the dialogue. Can we say US is getting more...politically correct? I remember the not-so-good old days where any foreign language was gobble-de-gook meant to pass off as some kinda foreign language. Which kinda pisses me off.
Anyways, I just had to squee about it. My self-imposed hermit status, in which I locked myself in my room and watched QAF on my laptop coz I can't watch it in public, is over. I'm hoping I could go back to normal, but I've still got a QAF itch that I can't seem to scratch. LoL! Here's hoping that the itch'll go away and for many, many more shows like this to come our way.
EDIT : I take back my rating of Drew and Em as number 6. Was watching this ep that I missed, the one where Drew came onto Em for the first time. If he can do that with other men when he's engaged to Sierra, then once more when he's married, he really can't resist temptation, can he? Unless there's Season 6 where he proves himself, he's really a bad idea for Em's partner. Ok guys, you're dropping in rank now...Even if you're hot...
