Vivian Valdez sat at the kitchen table and blindly read the article in the newspaper. Youth killed in drug raid. That was the headline. Where did it mention he was her little boy? Where did it mention he loved to play practical jokes on his brothers? He wasn't just a youth with a gun- he was someone's child, her child. Hector walked into the kitchen and rubbed at the stubble on his chin as he peered into the fridge. His wife looked over at him with ill desguised hate. How many more sons would Hector destroy? He wouldn't get Ric.

“ Are you seeing the priest today?”

“ Yes.”

“ See if he can do it tomorrow. I have things that need taking care of the day after.” Hector frowned absently thinking of one person in particular that he very much wanted to see.

“ I'll tell him.” Vivian murmured drinking her coffee.

Ric came in the room looking haggard. No 18 year old should have that look in his eyes Vivian thought. Closing her eyes she wiped her cheeks and thought about Eddy. He had wanted to be like his father. They all did. They worshipped Hector. She looked at the man as he poured himself a coffee and sat down opposite Ric.

“ We're going to see Michael today.” Vivian announced.

Hector grunted then put a wad of bills on the table. Vivian looked at him questioningly.

“ Get him a nice coffin. I want the neighbours to know that Hector Valdez took care of him.” her husband said drinking the rest of his coffee.

Ric looked at his mother and silently poured himself a glass of milk. Vivian ran her hand nervously through her hair. She was so tired. Tired of living. No mother should have to bury a son much less two.

“ Mama, I'll go with you and we'll pick out something nice.” Ric said gently.

Claire stirred her coffee as Ed read the newspaper. She watched the deep frown lines as he read Cindy's article. Most mornings they read her work then critiqued it but her husband seemed to had drifted off somewhere. Claire was momentarily distracted as Nate raced to the fridge and swung it open.

“ Leave it on its hinges! “ Claire ordered.

“ Go on, get to school.” Ed frowned.

“ I hate school.”

“ Good, you should be miserable.” Ed replied nonplussed.

Claire chuckled as Nate grabbed an apple and hurried out. Ed smiled absently and watched as his son bounded down the walkway to the bus stop. He had a lot to be grateful for. He had his boys and Claire.

“ Penny for your thoughts?”

“ Michael and Edward Valdez are two of Hector Valdez's sons.” he said waiting for her reaction.

Claire felt a cold shiver go up her back and she was thrown back three years. Ed said nothing more and returned to reading the newspaper. Claire watched him silently as she mulled over the piece of information he had just given her. The body in her morgue was that of Edward Valdez, the son of the man they all believed was responsible for putting Ed in a wheelchair. Closing her eyes, Claire prayed that this didn't mean a return to those dark days. She briefly thought of Lindsay and wondered if she had made the connection. Valdez seemed to slip through every attempt to bring him down and always there was a trail of bodies. Claire frowned, bodies that no longer worked.

Cindy glanced at Chloe and lowered her glasses as the photographer snacked at her desk. Looking up, Chloe grinned. Cindy rolled her eyes and put out her hand. Chloe handed her part of her sandwich then asked,

“ Are we going to the funeral? “

“ I don't know.” Cindy brooded.

“ This is news Cin. Cop guns down teenager.”

“ This is Lindsay we're talking about and she didn't gun him down. It was him or her.”

“ Why are you in such a funk? She's been cleared of any wrong doing.” Chloe replied munching on her half of the sandwich.

Cindy turned her computer monitor slightly and pointed. Chloe read silently then whistled. Cindy leaned back uneasily.

“ The same family? Does Lindsay know?”

“ Probably. I don't know. I'm more worried about Claire's reaction. If the father was behind Ed's shooting - “

“ How do they know? “

“ They couldn't prove it. Ed was shot in the back trying to arrest a group of drug dealers. That was how the first Valdez boy was killed. An Inspector Reeves shot him and they all suspected Hector Valdez shot Ed but they could never prove it.”

“ So he got away with it? “

“ Yeah. Lindsay didn't go into much detail but Ed and Claire went through hell.” Cindy frowned.

“ And another drug raid has ended with another Valdez dead. Wow.” Chloe mused.

“ Yeah and one in jail.” Cindy frowned.

“ Have you ever asked Claire about it? “

“ No, besides it was before I was around and I didn't want to stir up bad memories.”

“ Looks like they're about to be stirred up anyway.” Chloe said hopping to her feet.

Michael looked at his mother and lowered his gaze. Vivian wrung her hands and whispered,

“ The funeral is tomorrow. Your lawyer said you can't be there.”

“ I'm sorry mama.” Michael frowned.

“ You're always sorry Mikey! You were supposed to look out for your little brother.” Vivian said tearfully.

“ I tried Mama.”

Vivian shook her head and Michael looked at Ric who sat silent. They exchanged a look and Ric nodded understanding he would have to be there for their mother. Grimly, Ric touched her arm and motioned that they should leave. Vivian cried openly as the guard led Michael away.

“ Come on Mama.” Ric frowned.

Tom waited outside the psychiatrist's office and straightened up as Lindsay finally re-appeared. Lindsay eyed him with a frown. He seemed to pop up a lot and it was beyond annoying. Silently she wondered what she had ever seen in him. She also wondered what he thought he was accomplishing with all the attention. She knew Jill had picked up on it and although she'd said nothing, Lindsay knew it irritated the blonde. They may not have shared that they were a couple with anyone but they had both developed a territorial streak. For Lindsay, any guy glancing at Jill was just asking to be arrested. And if a woman ever did? Well, hell, she might have to shoot her. Jill, on the other hand, was inclined to be more amorous. Lindsay couldn't stop an impish grin, she liked Jill all out of gear with jealousy.

“ That's an odd reaction to seeing a shrink.” Tom smiled.

“ What are you doing here?” Lindsay fowned remembering he was there.

“ Just worried about you and I wanted to warn you, Vivian Valdez is in the building.” he said grimly.

“ Hell.”

“ Maybe you should take the back entrance to avoid any confrontation.”

“ I need to see Claire.” Lindsay replied.

“ Because of Hector Valdez.” Tom nodded.

“ Yes. I know she must be upset.”

“ She didn't come in today. Let Ed deal with her.” he advised.

Lindsay ignored him and headed down to the bullpen. Jacobi saw her and glanced warily at Vivian Valdez and her son. Lindsay realized, too late, who they were. Her step slowed and Vivian turned sensing her before she saw her.

“ You again.” Vivian murmured, “ I lose a child and there you are.”

“ Mrs Valdez, I'm sorry about Eddy. If there had been any other way..”

“ He was a boy.” Vivian replied tearfully.

“ He had a gun.” Lindsay said tensely, “ He left me no choice.”

“ You had a choice three years ago.”

“ I didn't shoot Joseph.”

“ The police killed both my sons!”

“ Mama, don't! This is no good. “ Ric hissed.

“ Your boy is right Mrs Valdez. “ Jacobi said gently.

Vivian eyed Ric then nodded. Ric eyed Lindsay silently then slowly led his mother away. Letting out a low whistle, Jacobi placed a hand on his partner's shoulder. Lindsay glanced at him and then eyed Tom who had taken in the whole scene. Tom gave her an I told you so look and came over.

“ Don't Tom.” Lindsay hissed smarting from the woman's rebuke and feeling the weight of the accusation.

“ Why can't you admit it's getting to you?! “ Tom frowned.

Lindsay glared at him and left but wisely took another exit. Tom had been right about one thing, she didn't need to run into Vivian Valdez.

“ Can't you mind your own business?” Jacobi frowned.

“ Lindsay's problem is she won't let anyone help her! You know, she'd never even cry in front of me!? I was her husband for god's sake! She won't let anyone close enough to see her vulnerable.” Tom said bitterly.

“ Maybe you need to remind yourself that you're her ex husband. It isn't any of your business.”

“ I'm still runnung this place Jacobi!”

“ You'll hide behind that once too often pal.” Jacobi scowled walking away.

Tom broodingly went in his office and stared out the window watching as Lindsay walked to her car. He knew she needed to let it out but he also knew she could never expose herself to anyone. He took some solace in the fact that she was like that with everyone and not just him. Tom didn't appreciate Jacobi's remarks. He was taking too many liberties with their friendship and it was pissing him off.

Lindsay arrived home and checked her messages then tiredly went into the kitchen. Martha followed her, silently stretching then patiently sitting by her dish. Lindsay smiled and filled it then reached for a glass and poured herself a stiff drink. She hated that Vivian Valdez had made her feel guilty, rationally she knew she had no choice but the mother's words haunted her. Miserably, she poured a second drink and determined it was a good day to get drunk. After all, she had nothing better to do than to think about Edward Valdez lying in his own blood because of her. Getting drunk might just wipe that image out of her thoughts.

Jill dropped her suitcase on the floor and entered her apartment feeling like death warmed over after the flight. She had opted to leave earlier than Gates which had meant a late evening flight. Now, at midnight, she was standing in the middle of boxes and boxes of her things. The idea of moving still made her cringe but staying in her apartment was impossible because of the memories of Peters being there. The blonde had virtually thrown away every article of clothing she owned. The movers were supposed to be there the day after tomorrow and Jill hadn't even told the girls about the move, not even Lindsay. She knew their first question would be why. How did she explain that every night in this apartment was a night of bad dreams and memories that had her terrified? Mutely she flicked on the lights then wiped her face. With a soft curse, the blonde grabbed her bag and headed to Lindsay's relishing the idea of snuggling up to her girlfriend where she felt safe.

~~~
Martha's tail wagged so hard that Jill was sure it would come off. Gently laughing, she hugged the dog and rubbed her ears.
“ Hello beautiful. Where's your mama?” Jill whispered.
Jill eyed Lindsay with amusement when she found her asleep in a chair. Leaning down she coaxed a kiss out of her lover and pulled back at the taste of whiskey. Knowing Lindsay as well as she did, Jill had no doubt something bad had happened. Lindsay drowsily nuzzled her neck as Jill got her standing and moving in the general direction of the bed room.
“ You're beautiful.” Lindsay mumbled nibbling at one of the blonde's ears.
“ You sweet talker you- here babe, lift.” Jill ordered getting the lanky brunette's jeans off of her.
“ I missed you.”
“ I missed you too sweetie. Whoa- hey!?” Jill exclaimed as Lindsay pinned her beneath her and kissed her hungrily. Jill kissed her back then finally was able to break free only to moan as Lindsay's hand squeezed one of her breasts.
“ Linds- god, slow down.” Jill murmured as Lindsay pulled at her skirt which had rode up exposing a generous amount of thigh.
“ Don't want to- please Jill- want you so much ..” Lindsay crooned running a hand under the skirt.
“ Linds- alright, alright- whatever you want sweetie.” Jill gasped taken off guard by her lover's needy plea. Lindsay moved rapidly once her lover gave permission and fairly tore the buttons loose as she sought to get closer to the blonde. Jill hadn't ever experienced roughness before from Lindsay but dazedly realized she was getting damned turned on. Gasping, she felt Lindsay's lips skim down her throat as the lithe brunette shifted on top of her.
“ Whatever I want-” Lindsay whispered anxiously letting her hand run down the blonde's hip.
“ Whatever you need baby.” Jill consented relaxing beneath her and letting Lindsay control everything.
“ Jill- “ Lindsay whimpered kissing her demandingly and setting a frenzied pace to their lovemaking.
