She hated the rain almost as much as she hated the dark. Not only was the rain pouring down but the wind was whipping it sideways and her jeans were soaked below the edge of her leather jacket. In no uncertain terms, Lindsay was uncomfortable and miserable. The only saving grace was the surveillance team was about to switch shifts and she could go home to a hot shower and maybe she could entice Jill over. No, scratch that, Jill was out of town and had been for nearly a week and a half. Lindsay scowled, that was why she was miserable.
Her cellphone vibrated and Lindsay ducked under some shelter to take the call. Cranson and Girard had arrived. Lindsay waved to Jacobi who pointed in the direction of the warehouse. Lindsay sighed realizing something was happening. It would figure that it would happen just as her shift was about to end. It was four a.m. and she was cold and wet damn it. Something was definitely going down though and Lindsay warily looked for her partner. Jacobi was moving with her closer to the building. Lindsay saw the other two detectives out of the corner of her eye. She was suddenly very glad there were four of them.
The warehouse was one of those metal type where everything echoed. Lindsay's head shot up as Cranson bumped into a stack of car parts. The resulting crash bounced loudly throughout the warehouse.
“ They're running! “ Jacobi bellowed breaking into motion.
“ Jacobi! I've got the taller one!” Cranson yelled.
Lindsay caught the motion towards the back and broke into a run shouting to Jacobi as she went. Weaving through the boxes and crates, she zeroed in on her quarry. Nimbly she avoided the hubcap he sent flying in her direction. He broke out into the center of the floor headed for a rear exit.
“ Police! Freeze! “ Lindsay yelled raising her gun.
He wasn't giving up without a fight. Lindsay silently swore as he spun towards her brandishing a gun. There was no choice but to fire. Lindsay aimed and did what she was trained to do and in the badly lit warehouse she stood watching as he fell lifeless to the ground. Breathing heavily, Lindsay walked over to look for a pulse. The warehouse seemed to have calmed. Jacobi shouted that he had caught one while someone else shouted some had escaped arrest.
Cranson came running up to Lindsay as she bent beside the body. He was a mere boy. Lindsay felt sick and blinked hard. She guessed him to be about sixteen, maybe slightly older. Closing her eyes she wiped her face then looked at his hand still clutching the gun. What was he doing with a gun? All these kids? What were they doing with guns?
“ You shot a kid? “ Cranson asked whistling.
“ How many got away? “ Lindsay asked gruffly not liking the tone of his voice. The kid had a gun. She didn't have a choice. Did she?
“ Two or three. Can't be sure.”
“ Call it in. I'll go see if Jacobi needs any help.” Lindsay murmured.
They watched as the youth was cuffed and read his rights then Jacobi eyed his partner with concern. Brothers. One dead and one arrested. He had screamed at Lindsay vowing to make her pay. It wasn't the first time one of them had been threatened but they suspected Michael Valdez would try to keep his promise if he got the chance. He wasn't more than twenty- one himself but already his life was fast tracking to a life in prison. Drug trafficking and resisting arrest, threatening an officer of the law, gun possession.. yes, Michael Valdez was in serious trouble and his kid brother was dead. Despite knowing all this, Lindsay was wracked with guilt wondering if she could have done it differently.
Girard walked over and smirked,
“Looks like a freakin supermarket in here. Aisle one stolen car parts no doubt. Aisle two, cocaine..”
“ But the guy in charge got away along with at least two more. Cranson, did you forget to tie your shoe?!” Jacobi joked rubbing his neck.
The veteren cop gave him the finger and they all chuckled not because it was funny but because they needed the release of the tension. Cranson slapped Lindsay on the back and winked,
“ It was you or him Linds.”
“ Thanks Brian.” she smiled grateful for the support.

Claire studied the young boy and sighed. It was such a waste. She had expected Lindsay to join them but she had begged off. Knowing Lindsay had been the one to shoot him, Claire didn't doubt that her friend wanted to distance herself. Taking any life was always hard for a police officer but one so young was even more traumatic that was why time off was mandatory.
Lindsay sat in Tom's office as he went through the initial reports. She picked at an imaginary piece of lint on her slacks.
“ The guys all back you up. It was a clean kill. Cranson and Girard both saw it. You're off the hook.”
Tom grinned thinking she would be pleased.
“ May I go now? “
“ Linds, are you ok? “ he asked.
“ Fine.”
“ Hey, you killed someone today. If you need a shoulder to cry on, I'm here.” he offered.
“ No, I'm fine.” she lied.
“ You get the mandatory ten days and you'll have to see the department's shrink. I'll have someone call you with your appointment. Go home and relax. Treat it like a well deserved vacation.” he smiled.
“ Yeah. “ she murmured leaving.
Jacobi waited in the outer office and she forced a smile. Her partner handed her a cup of coffee. Lindsay sighed and took it gratefully.
“ The boys want you to come with us for drinks. Just to unwind a little.”
“ Are you going?”
“ Denise is swamped with both Jill and Gates out of town. So, I figure a few drinks can't hurt.”
“ Yeah. A drink sounds good.” Lindsay mused.
“ Come on, I'm buying.” Jacobi smiled.

Denise rubbed her eyes and glared as Hanson walked into her office. Flashing a grin, he sat down and pointed to the file on her desk. The petite asian woman arched an eyebrow.
“ We're looking for some compassion here. Valdez wants to attend his brother's funeral.”
“ You expect us to grant that based on his pristine criminal record no doubt. Hanson, he's trouble with a capital T. “ Denise frowned.
“ Innocent until proven guilty.”
“ Fuck that, he was caught red handed this time and there's no way to wiggle out.”
“ His mother is begging Denise.”
“ She should have kept him out of a life of crime. The State doesn't owe him compassion.”
“ I hate election years.” Hanson chuckled heading for the door. He had known the answer before he had gone in but he had found out what he had needed to know. Denise Kwon sensed a high profile case with lots of publicity and she wasn't about to look weak on drug dealers.

Had the mountain of paperwork grown through the night? Jill groaned inwardly and put down her ever present cup of coffee. The blonde sat down and let out a sigh. She was feeling out of sorts. She'd left several messages for Lindsay but hadn't heard back from her and she could really use hearing that low smokey voice. She was missing her like crazy. Jill suddenly smiled. Seven weeks. She and Lindsay had been dating for seven weeks and it was better than better. Lindsay had wanted to keep their new relationship private for awhile since they worked in the same building but also because she liked keeping it just theirs. They hadn't even told Claire and Cindy. Jill had readily agreed not wanting more of her lovelife fodder for the office gossipers. This was one relationship she wanted to protect and Jill wasn't ready to examine her possessiveness.
Jill absently sipped her coffee and grinned at the naughty text message she had sent the Inspector. She imagined Lindsay's eyebrows going into her hairline and the lanky Texan blushing. She got a kick out of making Lindsay blush because it was so easy. Lindsay couldn't look at her sometimes without reddening because she knew how her mind worked and immediately knew she was thinking something x rated involving them. Lindsay would pretend to be shocked but damn if she didn't go along! Jill suddenly chuckled out loud.
“ Private joke or do you care to share?” a deep voice teased from behind her.
Dan Gates. Jill rolled her eyes. Gates was the product of an affluent family. He grew up believing he was superior and never bothered to put any effort into his job. He had gotten the job because of who he knew which annoyed the hell out of Jill. She'd struggled just to pay for law school.
“ Private.” Jill replied smiling sweetly as he sat down.
“ Is Sampson meeting us this morning?” Gates asked.
“ Not until later. She's in court.” Jill replied.
“ Man, look at these files. Are we going through all of them? “ he frowned.
“ Yes. “
“ Did you manage to get some sleep last night? “ Gates asked with concern.
Jill looked at him in surprise. He actually sounded sincere. The blonde shrugged self consciously. True she had fainted dead away yesterday but only because they had been going non stop and she had skipped some meals. She didn't admit that the nightmares were gnawing at her or that she skipped meals because her stomach was constantly in knots. The impromptu faint was an exception.
“ I'm fine Gates and I would appreciate it if you kept that fainting business to yourself. I don't need Denise on my case.” Jill said. Or anyone else.
“ No problem.” he smiled.

Lindsay had seen the messages from Jill but had refrained from returning them knowing she'd never fool Jill. Jill's provocative last text hadn't quite made her smirk but it had succeeded in making her smile momentarily. Yeah, she definitely wouldn't mind doing what the blonde was suggesting. Unfortunately that blonde wasn't there. Lindsay groaned and wished she was. They were so new together that it was still heady and intoxicating. Lindsay loved waking up when Jill stayed over and feeling the blonde's slight weight draped over her. She could definitely use one of their all night lovemaking sessions. She needed to get her mind to turn off and only Jill seemed to distract her. Lindsay had never needed anyone like that before in her life and it stunned her that Jill, who had been her best friend forever, had suddenly become so vital. Still, she didn't want Jill dropping everything just to come home and prop her up. She knew Jill would be there and reassure her that Eddy Valdez's death was unavoidable. Lindsay wanted the blonde there but she wouldn't tell her until she was back then she could get a little tlc from the blonde. The thought brought a smile to Lindsay's lips. She was fast becoming addicted to Jill's tlc.

The blow had stunned her at first and his hand had been firmly clamped over her mouth keeping her quiet. The bedroom was dark and Susan appeared to be asleep unaware of her father in the room. Jill squeezed her eyes shut as his hand slid under her nightdress between her thighs.
She had fixed her stare on the window and tears had run down her face unchecked. Peters had whispered in her ear as he groped her telling her how much he wanted her. She had tried to push him away but he was too strong and his hand had reached its goal. Peters had glanced over at Susan as he left but she hadn't moved. When the door closed, Jill had curled into a ball biting her lip until it bled.
“ You'll get used to it.” Susan whispered.
“ Noooo! Nooo--!!” Jill screamed herself awake and fairly fell out of the hotel bed as she struggled to full awareness. On all fours she dragged air into her lungs. Sobbing she held onto the leg of a chair.
“ Just a dream- only a dream.” Jill whimpered.

Lindsay pushed back her hair restlessly and sat down on the back step.Eddy Valdez's face haunted her dreams and she had woken up with a start. Rationally she knew she had done her job but his age somehow made that hard to accept. Sighing she finished the drink and glanced at Martha who wagged her tail and looked at her,
“ No, we aren't going for a walk.” Lindsay smiled rubbing the dog's ears.
Perhaps things would be better in the daylight she mused. Her smile returned and she realized Jill should be back in another day or two. Lindsay put the glass in the sink and locked up then sank down in front of the tv. If she couldn't sleep maybe she could find a reality show to watch, something inane and a complete waste of time.

Michael Valdez looked through the bars fighting the tears as he eyed Hanson North. There would be no special favours. His parents would bury a second son but this time he wouldn't be there to comfort his mother. She and Ric would grieve without him. All because of that bitch cop. She'd destroyed their lives but he knew his father wouldn't rest until they had justice. Hector Valdez loved his family.
