Who and what John does and doesn't know (suggestions/questions welcome)
The Die Hard canon has made multiple references to pop culture, John listens to Creedence, he appeared on Good Morning America, Matt had a Spawn figurine etc. So for game purposes, John's universe is this one. That doesn't mean he knows everything that we know. He is rather significantly gapped.
He has seen the first Star Wars movie (NOT episode 1) but none of the others, and he certainly has not read any of the novels. So he would recognize a light saber, but no characters other than Luke/Leia/Han etc.
He read comics as a child so will recognize the names Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent. Dick Grayson is the ONLY Robin he will recognize. Dead Pool -- not going to know. I have him pegged for a DC man.
He WILL recognize the Ninja Turtles -- because his kids would have made him take them to the movie. Likewise he will recognize references to other 80's cartoon shows: Care Bears, Thundercats, He-Man etc.
He is not a science fiction fan, so the Star Gate, BSG, Andromeda etc characters will be unknown to him.
He WILL recognize Bea Arthur, maybe even as Dorothy, because Golden Girls seems to be the ONLY thing on hospital tvs.
He WILL recognize Hot Lips.
He will have no knowledge of any video game more current than Ms. Pac Man.
He may not have read or seen the Lord of the Rings, but will have heard others talking about it. Even so, it is a toss up whether he will recognize the names Faramir or Arwen. I am thinking probably not.
