yifan gets his first tattoo when he is 16, and swimming in teenage angst and loneliness. he is underage, but it’s easy to get access to a fake id that says he is 19, and technically a legal adult. he chooses a borneo scorpion design which represents bravery. years later when certain people ask him about the tattoo, he will say something along the lines of ‘i needed a reminder to stay brave because my parents were moving to south korea’, but the truth is he was so scared of getting his first tattoo every design the tattoo artist showed him kinda blended together. the tattoo hurts like a bitch, but yifan spends a lot of time admiring it. the sleek lines of the design can hold his attention for eternities. over the years, yifan will get many tattoos, but his first tattoo will always be his favorite.

yifan gets his second tattoo when he is 22. he has moved to china in an attempt to himself and understand who he is, but through some strange turn of events which he prefers not to think about he ends up enlisting in a secret organization of assassins for hire. yifan blames luhan for this because luhan is one of the few clear details he can remember from the ordeal. yifan makes it through initiation through sheer luck, and by the skin of his teeth, but he is considered the best of his group. yifan thinks that these people are insane, but doesn’t voice his thoughts for fear of being gutted or skinned alive. so, when the higher ups tell him he has to get a tattoo to mark him as one of theirs, he shuts his mouth and has the characters for hidden and power tattooed on his lower back by a man who calls himself lay. yifans remembers getting this tattoo all too clearly because he spends the entire time afraid that lay’s hands will slip and he will fuck up, and yifan will have to live with his mistake until he shakes his mortal coils. when yifan looks at the tattoo later, he thinks to himself ‘secret assassin or not, mom will definitely kill me if she ever finds out about this.’

the next time yifan gets a tattoo, it’s after his 5th assignment. this is the assignment that makes yifan truly disgusted with himself and the world. he spends three hours on the rooftop of a building across from a park with a long range rifle, and at exactly 2:00 he picked off a family of 3: mom, dad, and 7 year old daughter. the little girl was wearing a daisy crown, which became stained with red from the bullet yifan had put into her head. after this assignment, yifan gets drunk on cheap,piss-tasting alcohol. he wakes up with a tattoo on his chest. it’s a small daisy with the words memento mori written in the center. he dry heaves into a filthy motel toilet. as he’s emptying his stomach into the toilet, a quote flashes across his head:
“men ought either to be indulged or completely destroyed, for if you merely offend them they take vengeance, but if you injure them greatly they are unable to retaliate, so that the injury done to a man ought to be such that vengeance cannot be feared.”

the next time yifan gets a tattoo it’s of a dragon wielding knives. it’s as much of a status symbol as it is another reminder. after years in the game, and countless one night stands, yifan finally decides to settle down for a relationship. her name is victoria song, and she’s as pretty as she is deadly. but kris doesn’t find this out until her ex girlfriend, amber liu, tries to kill them. more specifically him, because they have this crazy on again, off again thing that everybody but him knows about. ‘the incident’, as kris will forever refer to it, end with several knives coming too close to his dickfor himto ever be comfortable, 2 new friends, and really good leverage. any time he needs a favor from amber or victoria, he just has to remind them of that one time they almost chopped off a central part of his identity and they’ll fold. kris also comes out of the incident with a new found fear of women, so he ditches his bisexual tendencies and sticks to solely fucking guys.

yifan gets his 5th tattoo when he realizes that he has fallen heads over heels for chanyeol and he wants to spend the rest of his life with this idiot. he gets 박찬열 written over his heart. it is yifan’s favorite tattoo up to date. it shows how he has grown as a man. it signifies happiness everlasting. it is a physical representation of all the good things in yifan’s life. it is essentially a part of yifan’s identity more than any of his other tattoos have ever been.

the one time that yifan gave a tattoo, it is to his one true love park chanyeol. chanyeol had always been fascinated with yifan’s tattoos and scars. he liked to run his fingers over all of them, and ask yifan for the stories behind them. they’d been dating for five years when chanyeol asked yifan for a tattoo. it was after one of the infiltration jobs, in which yifan had to pose as a tattoo artist so he could get close to the target. chanyeol had not known that yifan could give tattoos.
they were laying in bed together, chanyeol tracing yifan’s tattoos, when chanyeol suddenly declared “i want one”. yifan sated and sleepy from the round of sex they had before had asked “one what?”
“a tattoo. and i want you to give it to me.”
“okay.” yifan had calmly acquiesced. but on the inside he was freaking out. chanyeol wanted a tattoo. and he wanted yifan to give it to him. he could not believe how lucky he was.
chanyeol’s design was simple yet complicated. the design was japanese in origin, but chanyeol had made it his with a few alterations. it was both their insignias, a dragon and a phoenix, chasing each other in a circle.
“see, yifan. it’s a metaphor. where you end, i begin. where i end, you begin. we’ll never be without each other.”
the tattoo takes a while to heal, but when it does yifan can barely keep his hands off it. and they’re both very happy with that.
