What are morals and why are they important?
Morals are the unwritten rules that exist in society regardless of whether the people deem them necessary. They set standards and serve as guidelines that we can use to judge whether certain action are appropriate. If, like Socrates thought, they are set rather than chosen, that is, they exist and are not chosen by society, then there must be a way to perfect being moral. If we are able to somehow discover what the morals we should have are, then society can be made utopian. This is certainly quixotic since a utopian society, by definition is unattainable. Also, although i believe the individual has the ability to control himself and be moral, it is hopless to think that all of us will be able to become moral machines at the same time and to stay that way. Aside from the fact that it would mean leaving behind our established lifestyles, people like myself who decide "it is hopless to think that all of us will be able to become moral machines," greatly contribute to not being able to reach universal morality.
Not to mention the people who have no interest in morality i.e. the extreme right, kkk, and the like. and the people who have no motivation for persuing such goals.
