They talked comfortably while heading to the ocean. Jared found Jensen liked various kinds of music from their conversation when Jared turned on the radio. Rock, punk, country, hip hop, techno and also classical music. Jared made a mental note that he would take Jensen to the theater, when Jensen mentioned his love for the opera and how much he wanted to go to the real opera. Jared also found Jensen was familiar with movies. Jensen loved from the old black and white movies to kids movies. Jensen looked embarrassed when he admitted that there weren’t many options to spend time in institute besides watching the movies or surfing the Internet. Jared felt sorry for Jensen. Jared wanted to give Jensen as many as opportunities to widen his experience like normal eighteen year old kid.
They stopped at the gas station and Jared bought some snacks and drinks while Jensen went to restroom. Jensen devoured half of the snacks before Jared started to eat making Jared laugh. When they arrived at the parking lot near the beach, it was almost at dusk.
“Jensen, if we hurry, we can see the ocean in the sunlight and at sunset. You shouldn’t miss this chance.” Jared jumped out of the car as they arrived at the parking lot.
“Okay.” Jensen got out of the car, laughing at Jared’s eagerness.
Jared thrilled at the idea of Jensen’s first encounter with the ocean. The ocean came into view as they walking down to the beach. The sun was going down but they still could see the ocean, glittering in the late sunlight.
Jensen gave a gasp with the view and reached out to Jared’s hand, giving his hand little squeeze. Jensen seemed he forgot how to speak. He was still holding Jared’s hand as they were walking down near the shore. They stood side by side just enjoying the view. Eventually, the sun sank lower and the ocean was burning a glorious crimson. When the sun disappeared beneath the horizon, Jensen finally let out a sigh of satisfaction.
“Wow.” Jensen whispered as if he was afraid he might ruin this beautiful moment.
Jared turned around to look at Jensen and met his eyes. Jensen’s eyes were full of awe and when he met Jared’s eyes, he gave Jared a dazzling smile. They didn’t talk but the silence was comfortable. They walked along the seashore and when it became too dark they sat on the beach. They were listening the sound that the waves breaking the shore.
Jensen broke the silence. “Thanks, Jared. I couldn’t agree more. It was so beautiful. I can’t describe it.”
“Yeah” Jared smiled. He thought maybe it was too dark for Jensen to see his smile but Jensen might sense Jared’s excitement from his words. Jared felt happy he was able to give Jensen a chance to see the ocean.
“Let’s go before it gets chilly.” Jared stood up and stretched. Jensen yawned and stretched his arms.
Jared extended his hand to pull Jensen up to his feet. “Tired?”
“Thanks. Yeah. I need my beauty sleep.” Jensen grabbed Jared’s hand and stood up.
They brushed the sand off their pants before starting to walk back to their car. But the peaceful atmosphere was broken by a sudden ringtone. They were both startled and stopped to check the caller ID.
“It’s Chad.” Jared actually could hear Jensen’s sigh of relief. Chad must have called because of the club.
“Hey, Chad. Sorry about the club.” Jared apologized.
“Forget the club, man. I’m calling you as soon as I saw your name on the news.” Chad’s voice was odd.
“My name?” Jared felt a sense of foreboding even though he didn’t know what Chad was going to talk.
“Yeah, your name’s on every fucking news channel. The police said there was anonymous phone call about the murder of Jim Beaver. They searched your apartment and found the weapon which was the same gun of the murder. Um…do you know this dead guy, Jim Beaver?” Chad asked cautiously but it made Jared felt sick. Even his best friend was thinking he might be a murderer. The existence of evidence was powerful.
“Jim Beaver? Of course I don’t know him. I’ve never heard the name. That’s bullshit!” Jared couldn’t help but raise his voice. He noticed Jensen flinched at the name.
“Hey, man. Calm down. I’ve known you from we were kids and I know you couldn’t kill anybody. If I thought you killed that man I wouldn’t call you for warning, right? Police found the weapon but they were confused because they couldn’t find any connection between you and him. But you’re still the prime suspect in the murder case. Don’t go back to your apartment. I think you’ll have to lie low until they repute your suspicion, okay?” Chad believed his innocence. That made Jared feel better. Jared sighed audibly. There must have been more people who would believe his innocence if there was no evidence except the weapon.
“Okay, thanks for warning me, Chad.” Jared said with sincerity.
“Yeah, you owe me. It’ll cost you more than setting me up with your sexy colleague. You know how much I love girls in uniform.” That was Chad. He could everything turn to a joke.
“Yeah, you can count on me.”
“Be careful, Jay. You know you can call me anytime if you need help, right?” Chad voice was serious.
“I know…thanks, Chad. Gotta go. See ya.” Jared ended the call. They were standing in silence for the moment.
Jared cleared his throat. “Jensen. Um…who was Jim Beaver? I bet you know him.”
Jensen flinched again at the question. “Jim Beaver… Jim was the one who helped me to escape. He had been a friend of Jeff’s since college and worked at the Morgan Foundation after the graduation. He started to work in the institute before I was born and he had been taking care of me even after my mother died. I called him Uncle Jim because I didn’t have a father so he was like a father for me. He helped me to run away and he was supposed to find me a doctor but I found he was murdered from the news, so I came here to ask your help. I think …I think Jeff killed him because he helped me. He died because of me.” Jensen’s voice was trembling. “Why… what happened, Jared?”
“The police got anonymous phone call and found the weapon used to kill Jim Beaver in my apartment. I’m the prime suspect now.” Jared couldn’t believe that he was the prime suspect of the murder even though he said it his own voice. He couldn’t believe this whole situation. It felt like just a story from another world.
“Jeff...” Jensen said weakly.
“Yeah” Jared didn’t wait for Jensen and started to walk to the car. He didn’t bother to look back whether Jensen was following him or not. But he could hear the soft sound of Jensen’s steps on the sand.
When they reached their car, there was another call. Jared checked the screen. It might be a police. But it wasn’t. From the number, Jared could tell it was from Jeff.
“Mr. Morgan.” Jared said through gritted teeth.
“Well, well, Mr. Padalecki. I hope you liked my special present. I know I’m too generous.”
“I see now. But don’t expect I’ll change my mind with that.” Jared said sarcastically. Jared felt anger began to build and he saw red.
“I can’t believe how stupid you are, Mr. Padalecki.” Jeff huffed.
“Yeah, I can be very stupid sometimes. You don’t have to remind me.” Jared ended the call before Jeff said anything. He paced up and down beside the car. He expected Jeff would do something for his refusal but he didn’t expect that he would be a fugitive from the police.
“Jared…” Jensen stepped forward to Jared.
“Don’t.” Jared held up his one hand toward Jensen. He didn’t want to raise his voice to Jensen. He knew it wasn’t Jensen’s fault. He should have prepared himself for the worst situation when he said no to Jeff. He needed to compose himself. “Please, Jensen. I just need time to think.” Jared leaned on the hood and closed his eyes. He just refused Jeff’s demand again. It meant he needed to give up his whole life which he built up until now. He knew he didn’t have other choice. He sighed heavily and opened his eyes. He could see Jensen was standing the same place, keeping his distance from Jared. He looked a complete wreck.
“Jensen, do you have a destination to runway too? I don’t think we can keep driving from place to place. We need a place to stay until you give birth to your baby.” It was a very steady voice and Jared was surprised how it sounded calm. Jensen seemed surprised with Jared’s words.
“Um…no. I was just heading north. But I think you’re right. Um…Jared. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to mess up your life. I’m so sorry. It’s my fault. Jim died because of me and you…” Jensen’s voice trembled and finally he started to sob.
“Jensen, C’mere.” Jared extended his hand to Jensen, still leaning on the hood.
At first Jensen didn’t move but eventually he came to Jared. Jensen was still sobbing hard, gasping for breath. Jensen’s eyes were closed tightly and he was shaking.
“Jensen. You need to calm down.” Jared reached over and placed his hands on Jensen’s arms. He pulled Jensen to himself so Jensen standing between his legs and he squeezed Jensen’s arms lightly to get his attention.
“Jensen, please. Will you listen to me?” Jared pleaded softly.
“Ye… Yeah” Jensen was still sobbing but he started to calm down.
“Jensen. You need to understand. You came to ask my help but it was me that made a decision to help you. You didn’t force me to help you, right? I’ve never met your uncle Jim but I think he helped you because he loved you and because he wanted to. And I’m sure he wouldn’t regret it.” Jared felt Jensen’s body relaxed eventually.
“You really…think so?” Jensen asked softly and finally he opened his eyes and met Jared’s eyes.
“Yeah, I’m sure.” Jared said, looking at Jensen’s eye.
“Now about the place, I know where we can stay. I know, I know. Jensen. I’m awesome.” Jared said cheerfully to make Jensen feel better. And Jared got his reward because Jensen almost smiled at Jared’s words. “There’s cabin in borderland. My uncle owned it, well, actually my uncle’s brother. But he transferred to Europe because he expanded business there. It’s only my uncle who uses the cabin and only summer. So we don’t need to worry about him until next summer. Since the owner’s name isn’t Padalecki, I don’t think the police would even think of the cabin. Oh, but it’s near Canada. Heavy snow and cold weather will be a bitch.”
“Sounds good to me. Snow? I want to have a snowball fight.” Jensen smiled.
“I bet you’ll regret what you said now when you need to go through the disaster of a heavy snow day.” Jared wrinkled his nose recalling the terrible mornings after snow.
“Uh-uh. I won’t.” Jensen shook his head exaggeratedly.
“No. I bet you will.” Jared smiled and stood from the hood. “And I bet you’re hungry. Why don’t we go to eat something? “
“Yeah, I’m starving.” Jensen smiled shyly and cleared his throat. “Jared, um…I don’t think you can keep your cell phone. I’m sorry but you have to destroy it. The police or Jeff will find us by using GPS.”
“I understand.” It was a logical conclusion. It would be dangerous to keep it. “I want to call my momma before. Do you think is it okay?”
“Yeah, but you need to make it quick, Jared. The police might trace a call.”
“Okay.” Jared called his mother, thinking whether she heard about the news.
“Hello, Padalecki speaking.” Jared’s mother Sharon answered cheerfully and Jared found she didn’t hear the news yet.
“Hi, momma.”
“Jared, honey. You didn’t call last week and didn’t answer the phone yesterday. Is everything okay?” Sharon said with concern.
“I’m okay, momma. Well, I need you to promise me something. Please, don’t believe anything because it’s not true.”
“What’s wrong, honey?” Sharon’s voice became serious.
“Momma please. I don’t have time. Will you promise me?” Jared pleaded.
“Okay, I promise. But honey, you’re scaring me.”
“Thanks, momma. Please, don’t worry about me. I’m really okay. Sorry, I gotta go. Love you, momma.”
“I love you too, honey.”
Jared ended the call. He knew his momma wouldn’t believe the news. He knew she would worry about him no matter what he said but he wanted to tell her by himself. He sighed and pulled SIM card out his phone. He crouched down and put the phone underneath of the front tire. If they drove on the phone, it would be completely destroyed.
“Jared. I’m sorry.” Jensen looked defeated.
“Jensen, it’s okay. I’m sure she would understand if she knew the situation. Well, actually she would help you herself.” Jared smiled at thinking how she could be strong sometimes. “And I’m sure everything’s going to be alright. I got feeling we can make it together.”
“I hope so.” Jensen still looked lost but his face lightened little by Jared’s words.
“I’m sure. Did I tell you my momma always said I’m eternal optimist? Let’s go, Jensen. I’m starving too.” Jared opened the door of driver’s side and gestured for Jensen to get in.
“I’m pregnant, Jared. I’m not a girl” Jensen rolled his eyes but Jared could see he was fighting his smile. Jensen climbed into the seat and as soon as Jared got in and buckled up he started the car to find a decent diner.
“Um…One room with two beds or two rooms for each one of us?” Jensen asked Jared nervously. They ate dinner and hit the Wall-Mart to buy things like clothes to change and toiletries. And now they were here in the parking lot of the motel.
Jared thought about it for a moment and answered. “I think one room would be better for both of us. We can watch each other’s back and don’t need to worry what would be happening in the other room.”
“Got it. Wait here, I’ll get a room.” Jensen smiled and got out of the car.
Jared could see Jensen jogged toward the motel office from the windshield and couldn’t stop but smiling. Jensen was charming and very attractive. Jared couldn’t deny that he felt attracted to Jensen. Yes, he even felt an impulse to lick Jensen’s neck the very first day they met. But Jared realized his feelings about Jensen weren’t just a sudden impulse for sex. He liked Jensen’s shy smile, the sound of him laughing. He wanted to see more of Jensen’s smile and he wanted to be the reason for the smile. He wished they could meet under a normal situation and go out for dates doing various things together. He thought he might be able to overcome the failures in his past relationships and have a steady relationship with Jensen. But it was far from a normal situation. He had become the prime suspect of a murder and he had to avoid a chance of being recognized. He couldn’t use his credit card and he didn’t have cash to pay. Jensen paid all the costs of their dinner, purchases and now the rent. There was no way they could go out for dates. Jared couldn’t imagine what kind of relationship they would build up from now on. But there was one thing he could say for sure. He wanted to be Jensen’s friend not just to help, well, honestly? More than just a friend.
“Jared, Jared.” Jensen had already come back from the office and he was standing beside the opening door. He was holding his duffle bag and calling Jared’s name. Jensen frowned. “Jared, are you alright?”
“Sorry Jensen. I was just out of it. I must be tired. Did you get a room?” Jared gave Jensen embarrassed smile.
Jensen laughed. “Yeah, let’s go. I think you need your beauty sleep as much as I do.”
They entered their room. It was a typical motel room with two beds and a bathroom. They put their things on the beds. Jared sat on one of the beds and stretched his arms.
“Um…Can I use a shower first?” Jensen was holding his bag of toiletries and clothes to change. He blushed and fidgeted nervously.
“Of course Jensen. Go ahead.”
“Thanks.” Jensen said and rushed into bathroom.
Jared smiled. Jensen was so cute. When he answered Jensen that one room would be okay, he didn’t think about what would like to be sharing same room with Jensen. But now he was happy that he didn’t answer that he wanted two rooms. He lay on the bed, thinking how cute Jensen’s blushing face was. In the middle of thinking, he heard the sound of the door being closed with a click. He sat on and found Jensen was standing beside his bed. His face was pink because of a shower and he was wearing boxers and T-shirt which were big enough to cover his underwear. Jared thought it might be to cover his baby bump. It wasn’t big but it was fairly noticeable. Jensen must have felt Jared’s eye on his belly, he pulled down the hem of his T-shirt self-consciously.
“Um…twenty weeks?” Jared asked.
“Yeah, it’ll be twenty-one weeks next Wednesday.” Jensen answered sitting on his bed.
“So no more morning sickness?”
“Thankfully no more. It was…awful. I never want to go through that again. Now, I feel good, just little easily tired and always hungry.” Jensen laughed embarrassingly. “I think I’m going to be fat even before my baby becomes bigger.” Jensen said, rubbing his belly shyly.
“It’s not an embarrassing thing, Jensen. It’s common for pregnant wo…person to have a good appetite. Good nourishment is very important not only for the baby but for you.” Jared smiled at Jensen.
“Thanks, Jared.” Jensen smiled with a twinkle in his eyes.
Jared found Jensen’s hand, rubbing his belly, became more confident with his words. Jared felt warm and happy. He wanted to cuddle Jensen. He wanted to sit with Jensen and place his hand on Jensen’s hand. He wanted to touch and feel Jensen’s body. Jensen’s hair looked so soft, his green eyes so deep and expressive, his thick and long lashes made a shadow on his cheek, his lips looked so delicate and looked so…delicious…
“Jared…?” Jensen cocked his head and gave a questioning look.
Jared realized he had been staring at Jensen for a long time. “Oh…” Jared stood up abruptly. “Oh, I…I think I’ll take a shower.” He took bag of his new toiletries and rushed into bathroom. He didn’t bother to wait for Jensen’s answer and closed the door behind him. He leaned against door and banged his head with a soft thump and closed his eyes. He realized it would be sweet but torturous days until they arrived at the cabin.
