True Israeli

Aug 20, 2005 12:50

Yesterday, Friday, was a errands morning and an evening lounging in comfortable clothes in front of the TV. I got up around noon (so not exactly morning... but we know me) I went and rented DVDs (a weekend regular for me), bought junk food, and a few other things my mom wanted, and got my cell phone fixed. It took them about half an hour to fix the cell so I went walking around the "mall" (I guess.... Not exactly) and went into a shoe store. (I wish they had Payless here, I'd have sooo many shoes...) So I try on this and that and then I come around the flipflops and try a pair on and holy shit it fits perfect. Of course I buy it. I go back to get my cellphone which is now supposed to be fixed (but on my way home I find that is not, which is good because this is the third time I'll be going to get it fixed and they're going to have to replace it!)

Then off to work to drop off a few things that my friend asked me to bring her so she can survive a Friday afternoon hell-shift (package includes chocolate, coke, pretzels, cigarettes, a sandwich from Aroma (good shit), ice coffee and a package of cookies). As I walk into work with that package and my new flipflops she rushes up to me, looks at me wearing my fishermen sharwall (Arab fishermen clothes, moi popular in Israel and moi moi comfortable) and my tank top and she says, "you are hereby pronounced a true Israeli. This must be the 5th pair of flipflops you own!"

And I think about it, its true! Every Israeli, male of female, has at least 5 pairs of flip flops.

1. home flipflops
2. beach flipflops
3. daily light flipflops to go with light clothes
4. daily dark flipflops to go with darker clothes
5. evening flipflops. (yeah... evening, i know. israelis (and i) are dumb).

I hereby enter that group. Not proud. But the fact is that in Israel flipflops are sandles. And in Israel, where every day is about 100 degrees, you will not wear anything that closes in on your foot like sneakers or allstars or whatever else, if you don't have to.

So I am hereby glad to pronounce myself as a real Israeli.

israel, flipflops
