seventy

J's father turns seventy today! We're going out for a small family dinner, since the big celebration dinner was actually held last Saturday, at the Asia Grand restaurant with about forty relatives and friends. He actually didn't want to have a big bash at all, but J convinced him and organised it all so that all he really had to do was turn up. It turned out to be a great party, where everyone was entertained by the antics of the grandchildren and amused with the big cake that we got. I'm really glad he enjoyed himself. He's had a long life with quite a lot of hard work and he definitely deserves a celebration like this.

The cake was from Pine Garden's, which I had heard a lot about but never tried. J and I wanted to have a cake with visual impact so we chose one with a longevity peach (although it looked like a boob to me and some people thought it was a strawberry) with auspicious couplets on the side. It was 3kg with an orange and chocolate sponge and when J brought it home we had to empty out half of our refrigerator so that it could fit inside.

[Incidentally, I wonder if anyone has ever bothered reading the fine print on the back of the Pine Garden's invoice. It is hilarious, and pretty much explains the typical consumer behaviour one might expect from Singaporeans. I would have taken a photo of it except that it was printed in very light ink and wouldn't show up right.]

The Bun, working up an appetite by racing back and forth
outside the restaurant with his rather more sedate cousin, Sarah.

Impossible to get a decent family photo these days.

J's father, cutting the cake with his two able assistants
who hijacked helpfully blew out his candles.

Cake eating is serious business. A waitress saw him licking the plate
and apparently felt sorry for him, because she brought him a second slice!
Maybe it was all that cake, and all the activity, because The Bun remained crazily hyper after dinner was over. While his grandfather was having a last drink with his friends inside the restaurant, the rest of the immediate family sat outside the restaurant watching The Bun sing, unprompted, various nursery and nonsensical songs at the top of his voice. After each song he would do a very exaggerated bow and demand that we clap for him. Some passersby clapped for him too, although I'm sure most wondered why a kid like him was doing out so late past his bedtime!
