call of the wild

Last night I came across my very, very old (printed 1979!) childhood copy of Jack London's Call of the Wild and stayed up till one in the morning re-reading it. It was one of my favourite books as a child because I loved the character of Buck, the pampered dog that is forced to become a sled dog in the harsh world of 1880s gold-crazed Alaska.

Reading the book reminded me of a Peanuts cartoon, 'What a Nightmare, Charlie Brown!' that was loosely based on the Call of the Wild. It was well-loved in our household and my sister and I spent many afternoons watching the video several times. So this morning I went to youtube and watched it again. It was so good. Why don't people make cartoons like this anymore?

In the cartoon, Snoopy has too much for dinner (Charlie Brown complains that he is 'overly civilised') and has a nightmare in which he becomes a sled dog in the Arctic. He suffers at first but slowly learns to be 'wild', fighting the other dogs for the alpha position and turning into an accomplished sled dog.

When was the last time you saw Snoopy on all fours?

Or howling at the moon?
After he wakes from his nightmare Snoopy returns to the house and makes himself a big sundae. I laughed out loud when I saw this scene because my sister and I loved it back then! I am going to show this video to her - I'm sure it will bring back as many memories for her as it did for me.

The video is on youtube (in 3 parts), while it lasts. It's less than thirty minutes long, and a real treat to watch!
