Once again I mourn the dearth of any creative or arty magazines for parents, especially in Singapore. The ones published here mostly consist of badly regurgitated press releases and boring fashion spreads which for some reason always feature Caucasian or Eurasian kids. What's up with that? I also hate reading the articles which tend to range from the doom-and-gloom sort to the you-should-be-parenting-like-everyone-else type: pick the right preschool! (poorly disguised advertorial masquerading as journalism) prevent 48395 diseases! organise good playdates! Most of the advice given is commonsensical at best and not very inspiring or interesting at all. Perhaps I'm just not their target reader.
La Petite magazine helps to fill in a gap for me at least. It's an online magazine for parents with a strong design and DIY focus. La Petite's content is generated by several bloggers, but what really gets to me are the gorgeous visual spreads - quirky and sometimes dark illustrations and imaginative photography. The clothes featured are whimsical and arty-indie, the sort of clothes that are ridiculously priced considering the fact that the children outgrow them in a matter of months, but it doesn't stop me from admiring them anyway.

My favourite spread from the current issue. I like that their child models are not conventionally pretty or cute, but they are very attractive nonetheless, in an intriguing way.

Who needs child models anyway, when you have drawings that evoke the whimsy of the clothes just fine? These drawings remind me of
Fifi Lapin.

There are so many ways to depict and celebrate the beauty of children, and I enjoy the ways in which La Petite tries to push the boundaries of expectations for a 'magazine'. Daily life is filled enough with mundanity and chores - give me my escapism, tickle my sensibilities, remind me that beauty exists amidst all the gunk and clutter. Issue 3 of La Petite is out now.
