the goggle box

Through a happy arrangement with one of my friends, we finally have cable TV in our home! (Till December, at least.) Yes, we have been living under a rock. Yes, we actually have been watching free-to-air television. Yes, the world is now in our living room.

So last night, J and I had pizza in our living room, set up the cable box, and then proceeded to goggle at the telly for the next three hours. What we watched: part of a documentary on komodo dragons, an old Jon & Kate Plus Eight episode (gosh, Kate is so annoying, even her own children got tired of her), some bit of a travel show featuring Morocco, and a documentary on UFOs. Somehow I don't quite have the attention span to sit through a HBO movie or an hour-long episode from a drama series. But there's a lot on offer (way more than what our regular TV has!), and since I'm going to be home a lot more often once The Bun arrives, at least there'll be something for distraction if I'm not otherwise concussed from sleep deprivation and exhaustion.

For now, the TV is still turned off, and I've already checked the guide to figure out what shows I want to see, so I'll just turn it on again when my shows are on. And for a quick rant: I can't understand why some people love the reality show Baby Story. It's terribly overwrought and I keep feeling that I'm intruding on what should be a private time for families. Having someone film you through the experience of childbirth makes no sense to me. I watched my first episode this morning over breakfast and was going yuck, yuck, yuck in my head but still I watched it all. It's so over-performed, but I must confess to feeling teary when the baby was lifted up and out (it was a C-sect) and shown to her mother. I hope this doesn't mean I'm in denial about my own upcoming birth experience. The show does kind of prep you for what to expect, but the way it's presented is just too weird for me to watch. I'd rather have a proper, science-y documentary.

Must. Not. Let. Brain. Turn. To. Mush.
