chips on Saturday

Last weekend, mozzie and I decided to load up on a sinful dinner at mel_24’s brother-in-law’s stall, Wok of West. We were extremely amused by how much Des and his brother look alike.

We had the fish and chips, seafood pasta, and two chicken wings to share. I really liked the fish and chips - the fish wasn’t overly battered, but thin and moist with just enough breading. The coleslaw was surprisingly good (and I rarely eat coleslaw). My only complaint is that I wish there were more fish! But it’s cheap and good, so I guess I could be piggish and eat another plate by myself.

Definitely worth another trip.

What can you do on a Saturday night that doesn’t involve i) eating or drinking ii) clubbing and dancing iii) watching movies iv) bowling, karaoke, etc when you just want to hang out with your friends? We seem to have done the works - clubbing, shopping at 24hr Mustafa Centre, coffee, late-night movies, parties at each others’ houses, karaoke, wandering to the corners of Singapore to explore, blahblahblah. Novelty addicts we are - weekends are like a quest to find something different or interesting to do.

So that Saturday, we did something (not so) different. Mozzie, S and I took off (thank goodness for a car) to the airport and basically walked around and around, talking. I like going to the airport because it reminds me of trips taken and the fact that my life can be expanded in more ways than it seems when I’m stuck at the office. I also like the wide open spaces and the fact that it’s so huge, it’s hardly ever super-crowded. And it’s air-conditioned, has coffee joints that open till late, and lots of people watching to do.

We talked about our jobs and the fact that most of us do them because it’s a job, not because we really want to do it. Jobs can be interesting and to a certain extent you do want to do it, but if you struck the lottery and could retire immediately, you wouldn’t want your job any longer. That’s a job. We talked about getting older, and how even though we’re a bit more experienced, we don’t necessarily know what we want to do anymore than we did when we were 17. (We do know what we don’t want to do, though.)

Stuff I wanted to do at 17:
~ play in a rock band
~ move out of my parents’ house
~ read Literature in Cambridge
~ be a writer

Stuff I want to do at 27:
~ be in a job I really like (Magazines? Animals? Design?)
~ travel more
~ enjoy my healthy body - dress up, exercise, be more active

If anything, I think I’m vaguer at 27 than I was a decade ago.

belly happy, weekend, friends
