A long winded response, which mostly fails to convey my actual point, that romance is dead. martintenbones July 9 2009, 12:31:31 UTC
1) In my mind, the most incongruous thing about marriage in today's society is its basis in the idea that people will keep their promises simply because they made them (to both God and the spouse).

A notion of honor, loyalty, and honesty that requires a person to actually labor over making a relationship work rather than giving up on it because you aren't able give up on it seems almost... naive, to most people. Whether it's because of a decrease in the fear of God, or because lying has become second nature to our society (why do we not expect people to be honest if it conflicts with their own self interest, and have people always been that way?), I feel like society sees stupidity in the idea of keeping a promise until the end of time simply because you said that you would ( ... )

Full disclosure: I only read part of the actual article, and none of the comments.

Also, I didn't say anything about weddings. l DO see [the expense of] those as culturally ingrained and rather silly. I'd love to have a big wedding, but one that involves the following:

Potluck catering by all involved
No expensive clothing or decorations
A lot of alcohol
Probably being outside
A bonfire

Yeah, I'm a hippie. We know this. But all the cool ceremonies have bonfires.

What if instead of an Elvis impersonator, you had a Wookie doing Elvis covers?

Man, if I could sing, I would have just invented the perfect job.

Lucky for you, I don't think there's much singing talent required to impersonate a wookie.

Hrmm... an excellent point. I had been picturing the Wookie-ness being limited to the costume, and singing the songs normally. But I guess you could have a Wookie in an Elvis cosume that sang half in one's best Elvis voice and half in wookese. I'm guessing that's the name of the Wookie language, but I am not sure.

According to the Star Wars Wiki, the Wookies have three languages, none of which are called Wookese. Shows what I know.

Yes, this is meant to be read ironically.

Nah way! I'll have to research this. I wonder if there's a wookie speak translator?
