On Saturday 9th December,
Sirenz had been invited by Alex from the Alphawave project to join him for their fairly new weekly night, Resonance when Lab4 were headlining. He had requested 2 or more dancers, and we were originally going to be three, Heather, Alice and myself. Unfortunately, Heather had to work at the last minute so was unable to join us. Myself, Ian (
uvjunkie), Alice and Jonny headed down to Plymouth, which was an event in itself as I was stopped by the police on the way, whilst dressed in full fire costumes!
We arrived in Plymouth and headed straight into the club at just gone 10.30pm, added the finishing touches to our costumes and got out onto the dancefloor.
The music was bouncy and uplifting when we arrived and we enjoyed dancing around as the dancefloor quickly filled up. It was nice to be at a different kind of night to usual, it reminded me a lot of the good old days when I first started clubbing ;)
The atmosphere in the club was amazing, the people were friendly and up for it, and I really enjoyed dancing and interacting with everyone on the dancefloor… it was a night of smiles all round!
At 2am, the second part of the club opened, and we all knew that meant Lab4 were close! Us Sirenz had been booked to dance on stage during the second half of Lab4’s set, allowing Lab4 some time to interact with the crowd alone, before our performance alongside them.
As Lab4 began, the atmosphere in the club exploded as the duo’s high energy surrounded the dancefloor. Their set began as it meant to go on - dirty, industrial and f**king fantastic! Throughout their set, Lab4 played a lot of their older tracks, and it has to be one of their best live sets I’ve had the pleasure to hear.
After the first half, myself and Alice took our places either side of Lab4 and danced our hearts out. It was an honour to be performing for Lab4’s last set in the South West, and to dance on stage beside them has been one of the biggest highlights of my year!
For those who are unaware, Lab4 have recently announced that at the end of 2006 they will call it a day. Here is their official statement, taken directly from their Website, www.lab4.com
13.09.06 - OFFICIAL STATEMENT - LAB4 ARE TO CALL IT A DAY....
The following official statement has come personally from LAB4 and was sent out to those of you on the LAB4 Mailing List before it was uploaded onto this site. We are already being inundated with some really heartfelt emails from all over the world which are much appreciated, and which we are going to do our best to answer all emails eventually. As this is also a topic that seems quite hot on many clubbing websites at present, and so because of this we will be available for comment and interviews over the coming weeks on Harder Faster, Don't Stay In and www.MYSPACE.com/LAB4.
Well, it is definitely long over due that we put finger to keyboard and say Hi! It is unbelievable that we are already at this end of the year and discussing Christmas and New Years Eve gigs again.
The main reason for our contact though is to put pay to a bunch of rumours that seem to be spreading and growing, internet-wide about the future of Lab4……
At the beginning of this year we discussed our intensions of taking 2007 off to be able to recuperate physically and mentally, as well as to take stock of the past 15 years of our lives. We also felt that if we were to continue onwards with our music, that we need to be able to focus for longer without every studio session being disrupted by our gig schedule.
2006 has been a really hard year for us what with the endless delays with the None Of Us Are Saints album followed by being threatened with Legal action over a certain cover version, the Live Extreme productions in Japan and at Brixton Academy and all the extra planning, rehearsing and production work needed to pull off such big shows. After lots of soul searching and reflecting we have decided that it is time to call it a day with Lab4.
We have had an amazing trip with you all over the last 12 years, that has been a constant roller coaster ride of unbelievable highs and lows (mostly highs) that has taken us all round the world and put us in front of crowds of upwards of 15,000 in a single room, but we both know that the time has come to step off and let Lab4 be, and to move on to what ever maybe ahead for us both.
We will be playing live up until NYE which is being discussed with possible promoters at the moment and from there on anyone who is on our mailing list will be informed of what we will be up to into 2007.
We would like to thank everyone who has helped out in the Lab4 camp over the years, particularly Kym for keeping our website running and our calendar full, Ali and Lewy for all their help and support with the record store and for helping out as crew at gigs and Ian Shoesmith for all his help with our artwork. Also, thanks to everyone who has supported us over the years at gigs and via email, it has made all the difference.
Love + Respect
