Dean’s eyes snapped open, one fist pressed against his mouth. Had he screamed? A glance at his father, snoring from the other bed, confirmed that he hadn’t.
Shaking from a nightmare he couldn’t remember, he scanned the darkness, broken only by moonlight and the fluorescent numbers on the alarm clock. He curled protectively around baby Sammy, but didn’t close his eyes.
Dad had asked if he wanted a nightlight, but Dean had refused. He was a big boy and didn’t need one.
But sometimes, during the witching hour when the monsters walked the earth, sometimes he wanted one very badly.
