“I wonder if my mom knew what she was getting into when she married my dad,” Mary wondered aloud.
The kindly blue haired pianist who had agreed to witness their ceremony smiled. Her faded blue eyes were bright, no doubt reliving memories of her own wedding day, so many years ago.
“None of us really do, my dear,” she replied softly. “Life is a poker game - we just do the best we can with the hand we’re dealt.”
Whether she had known about it before the wedding or not, Deanna Campbell had accepted the hunter’s life and its consequences.
Mary nodded, her throat suddenly tight. “Yeah, I guess you’re right.”
She desperately wished her parents could be here with her on this, her special day. Blinking back tears, she examined her reflection in the full length mirror.
The dress was a modest one, simple yet elegant, a far cry from her childhood fantasies flowing princess gowns and long trains. Along with being swept away by a handsome knight on a white steed. She had put those silly ideas away a long time ago. Being raised in a hunting family had long dissuaded her of happily ever afters.
And yet, here she was preparing to walk down the aisle with her very own Prince Charming. Handsome, caring, gentle. And, above everything, normal. She’d be free of her past, with its monsters and death.
In less than an hour she’d no longer be Mary Campbell, but Mrs. John Winchester. And at long last she’d have everything she’d ever dreamed of.
She would finally be safe.
