(no subject)

One of my law school professors died yesterday: Morgan Shipman. He was a character. He had to be in his late 70's, if not 80's. He could barely hear -- he would talk about anything other than the subject you were learning. But he was an encyclopedia of knowledge about every subject in the law.

I had him for summer Business Associations after my first year. Did I learn business associations? Not really. Did I get an A? Yes. Did he have a heart attack, cancel class, and have class the next day? Yes.

However, I learned something that helped me through all of law school. Professional responsibility. Always know who your client is. Never forget it. Like if you are representing a husband and his wife wants you to do something that might adversely affect the husband, you can't do it. The husband is your client.

I learned about agency law. In fact, I still think of his example, "You hire a guy to be your agent and you give him permission to go to England and run over any baby he sees on the street." Long pause. "He goes to England, and . . . God Damn it! . . . That bastard runs over a baby. Sure as hell you'd be liable because he was your agent."

And I was amused with anecdotes like this for the entire class.
