Herb Score died today. I knew him as "the voice of the Indians" throughout my childhood, until he retired in 1997 (after they lost game 7 of the World Series in extra innings).
My parents knew him as an incredible pitcher in the late 1950's, potentially the best left handed pitcher of all time . . . until he was hit in the eye by a line drive off the bat of Gil McDougal of the dreaded New York Yankees. He miraculously came back after the accident, but he was never the same pitcher.
After his pitching career, he was the longest broadcaster in Indians history (34 years).
Every time I listen to Tom Hamilton and Mike Hegan on the radio today, I still sort of hear Herb Score's voice. Especially at the beginning of the game when Hamilton interviews manager Eric Wedge.
In my mind, I hear the line that always made me laugh: "Hi again everybody, this is Herb Score along with Indians' manager Mike Hargrove on the Mike Hargrove Show."
