omg, yes. i mean, someone did it to me. and you know who it was?? some dumb, tactless, rude book reviewer from people magazine. a total hack.
in my past life as a high-powered business woman (aka the ameoba one slot up from the bottom rung of the corporate ladder), i used to read people on my lunch breaks. anyway, i was all geeked to read The Historian. i mean, psyched. big, thick book full of spooky plot twists. i was saving it for my holiday at my boss' private beach property (wasn't as posh as it sounds...she was building it herself, so it was basically like camping as we holed up in the room above the garage, which had no insulation...and we had to walk down a huge, sandy hill to get to the beach...and then climb back up, usually at least two sheets to the wind...oh, and it was in michigan, not southern california...but hey, private beach is private beach).
that editor needed to be shot. or at least dealt some pain. maybe shot with a stun gun or something.
he totally gave away THE MOST CRUCIAL PART OF THE BOOK. he put in a quote that almost ruined the book for me. i say almost only because the writing was so awesome, and the plot twisty enough, that i still found massive amount of pleasure reading it. he decided, in a two paragraph review, to reveal something that was totally supposed to be a shocker about dracula. like, the A-HA! or TA-DA! detail. he was very snide about it, and i had that tone of voice in my head while reading (at least until i got sucked into the story).
oh, man. just thinking about that now makes me hot all over in a bad way.
as for doing this to other people, it's not really possible as i am so far behind the times these days. i don't see a movie until it hits netflix. i dvr my shows and watch them all about three days after they air. i tend to get most of my books on paperbackswap.com, which means nothing hot off the press...and i totally avoid reviews at this point. i mean, if i were to run around screaming the plot twist from a johanna hershon or marian keyes novel, it's highly doubtful i'd ruin someone's day.
