The highlight for most Singaporeans today would be the table tennis finals between S'pore and China.
To me, the so called Singapore team might as well be called China Team B. (I watched the Gymnastics finals instead during the time the match was played and i was not disappointed)
The highlight for me was, no surprises here, swimming.
No, not Phelps historic 8 golds haul but rather the 50m women freestyle event.
At the age of 41 when most swimmers would have retired a long long time ago, we have Dara Torres.
Not only did she win a silver in the 50m freestyle, she was 0.01 s behind the gold medal. She also helped the US women team to another 2 silvers in the games. This is her 5th Olympic outing starting at the LA games way back in 1984 as a 17 yr old, the most by any swimmer.
All the more impressive when she gave birth only 2 years go and had 2 minor surgeries done in the last 8 months.
Truly an inspiration to me, with a 'never-say-die' and 'nothing is impossible' attitude.
With that, Olympics swimming came to a close. The spotlight was firmly on Phelps but there were at least 4 other outstanding swimmers who went double gold in individual events, excluding the Relays.
Germany's Britta Steffen, the sprint queen, winner of the 50m and 100m freestyle
Britain's Rebecca Adlington, the long distance queen, winner of 400m and 800m freestyle
Japan's Kosuke Kitajima, King of Breast Stroke, winner of 100m and 200m Breast stroke &
Australia's Stephanie Rice, the best all-rounder, winner of 200m and 400m Individual Medley
Now, i'm truly inspired to watch live swimming competitions. Wonder if there is any chance for the FINA world championships to be held in the Asia-Pacific region in the not-too-distant future?
