I've always been a better baker than a cook.
This is because I love recipes, and I love to follow them incredibly precisely and measure everything incredibly carefully and all that fun stuff. This means I'm a competent cook, but not an adaptable one, and I'm a damn good baker, because I'm never ever sloppy. It's okay to be sloppy with cooking. It's BETTER to be a little sloppy with cooking. Because if you can adapt and improvise on the fly you will ruin things less often and they will often be much tastier when they're done.
Anyway, that's why I was so proud of the soup I improvised tonight. I totally made it up from stuff lying around the house and I didn't even contemplate glancing at any sort of recipe and it was really really good.
